JODECI — Forever My Lady (1991)

Some albums become successful.

Some albums become timeless.

And a very small number completely change the direction of a genre.

Forever My Lady belongs in that last category.

Jodeci didn’t just release a great debut album. They redefined what an R&B group could look like, sound like and represent.

They brought church vocals into the streets.

They mixed gospel, hip-hop, soul and swagger in a way nobody had heard before.

And the blueprint they created is still visible today.

For me, we also can’t tell this story without talking about DeVante Swing.

He is one of the true pioneers of modern R&B. A visionary producer, songwriter and architect whose influence extends far beyond Jodeci. His fingerprints are all over an entire generation of music.

My two favorite records on this album have always been “Forever My Lady” and “Come & Talk To Me.” More than 30 years later, both songs still sound fresh, emotional and authentic.

That’s the definition of a classic.

My Score: 9.2/10.

Released on July 2, 1991, today marks the 35th anniversary of “Peaceful Journey”, the third studio album from hip-hop group Heavy D & The Boyz 🕊️
Released on MCA Records/Uptown Records (@uptownrecords), “Peaceful Journey” was the follow-up to the 1989 album “Big Tyme”. In 1990, shortly after the release of “Big Tyme”, member Trouble T Roy accidentally fell to his death at the age of 22. Paying tribute in his honor, Heavy D (R.I.P.), DJ Eddie F (@djeddief), and G-Wiz (@mistergwiz) returned in 1991 with the third Heavy D & The Boyz album titled “Peaceful Journey”. Including the singles ‘Now That We Found Love’ and ‘Is It Good To You’, the album was well-received upon release, becoming one of the defining new jack swing-infused hip-hop albums of its time. Debuting at number 21 on the Billboard 200, “Peaceful Journey” was also the group’s second Platinum record. Production on the album was handled by Pete Rock (@realpeterock), Marley Marl (@djmarleymarl), Teddy Riley (@teddyriley1), Howie Tee (@hitman_howie_tee), Dave Hall (@davejamhall), Maurice “Nevelle” Hodge, DJ Eddie F, and Heavy D. Guest features include Big Daddy Kane (@officialbigdaddykane), Grand Puba (@therealgrandpuba), and others 🕊️
In 1993, Heavy D & The Boyz returned with their fourth studio album “Blue Funk”. Their fifth and final album titled “Nuttin’ But Love” was released in 1994 before Heavy D would go on to pursue his own respective solo career. Sadly, Heavy D passed way on November 8, 2011 at the age of 44. R.I.P. 🕊️
