UNDERVALUED COMIC GEM SPECULATION:
Spotlighting an undervalued book.

This magazine contains the earliest known printed image of Spawn that was made available to the public.
*N.B.: It was originally believed that the first printed image of Spawn was in “Up ‘N Coming Magazine #15”, but the cover date for that comic book solicitation catalogue is “February, 1992” which means it was released to the public after “Wizard Magazine Vol. 1 #4”.
Other known preview images of Spawn are:
“Comic Shop News #242 (cover dated February, 1992)”,
“Comic Buyer’s Guide #953 (cover dated February, 1992)”,
“Previews Vol. 1 #3 (cover dated March, 1992)”,
“Torg Vol. 1 #2 (cover dated March, 1992)”,
“Robotech II: The Sentinels Book II #13 (cover dated March, 1992)”,
“Rust Vol. 1 #1 (cover dated April, 1992)” and
“Malibu Sun Vol. 1 #13 (cover dated May, 1992)”.
The prototype image of Spawn contained in “Wizard Magazine Vol. 1 #4” pre-dates all other appearances and is therefore the first image of Spawn shown in any public form of media.
“Spawn Vol. 1 #1”, which is Spawn’s first official cover appearance and first full in-story appearance, has a cover date of “May, 1992”.

Wizard Magazine Vol. 1 #4 (cover dated December, 1991).
*Fine raw copies can be found online for $9 USD.
First publicly available printed image of Spawn (a preview image showing the outer sleeve of a VHS tape titled “Stan Lee Presents: The Comic Book Greats - December, 1991”. Although the character is unnamed, the image shown is clearly a prototype of “Spawn”).

UNDERVALUED COMIC GEM SPECULATION:
Spotlighting an undervalued book.

While the marketplace views “Avengers Vol. 1 #684” as the first appearance of the “Immortal Hulk” version of the character, this version actually popped up a few issues before.

Avengers Vol. 1 #682 (released February 28th, 2018).
*”Avengers Vol. 1 #682” is several times cheaper than “Avengers Vol. 1 #684”, with fine raw copies found online for $3 USD (very fine raw copies of “Avengers Vol. 1 #684” can be found online for $30 USD).
This comic contains the first time that the Hulk (Bruce Banner of Earth-616) is referred to as the “Immortal Hulk”.
*N.B.: The Hulk has apparently always been immortal, so the “Immortal Hulk” should be considered more of a story retcon rather than an all-new character.
The resurrection of the Hulk as the “Immortal Hulk” was teased in “Avengers Vol. 1 issues 680-681”, before his reveal in this issue.

COMIC SPECULATION:
Comic speculation centered on back issues that have relevance with storylines in current comics.

Marvel is releasing a new “Midnight” imprint focused on the horror-themed “Midnight Universe”. The concept is similar to an alternate universe from Marvel that debuted in 2009.
*UPDATE (August 28th, 2026): The first promo trailer for Marvel’s upcoming “Midnight Universe” imprint has been released, and the imprint’s line shares several similarities with Marvel’s Lovecraftian cosmic horror-themed “Cancerverse”.

Realm of Kings Vol. 1 #1 (one-shot. Released November 18th, 2009).
*Fine+ raw copies can be found online for $6.49 USD.
First in-story appearance of the Cancerverse (Earth-10011), a reality where the Many-Angled Ones (through their agent, Lord Mar-Vell) killed the cosmic entity Death and forced eternal life on every living being causing all of Earth-10011’s inhabitants to be corrupted and turned to their servitude, which resulted in a universe-wide undying corpse.
First in-story team appearance of H.P. Lovecraft’s “Great Old Ones”/“Eldritch Terrors”/“Outer Gods” as the Many-Angled Ones, primordial cosmic entities that live between universes.
First cover appearance and first in-story team appearance of the Revengers of Earth-10011 (Thor, Ms. Marvel, Giant-Man, Scarlet Witch, Captain America, Iron Man & Dark Quasar), the Avengers of the Cancerverse that were corrupted into monstrous versions of themselves by Lord Mar-Vell and turned into servants of the Many-Angled Ones.
First in-story appearance of the corrupted Hulk (Bruce Banner) of Earth-10011.
First in-story appearance of the android Vision of Earth-10011.
First mention of “The President” (Undying Lord Mar-Vell of Earth-10011).
First mention of Yot-Soter, Marvel’s version of H.P. Lovecraft’s “Yog-Sothoth” (the Outer God of gates, space, and time).

A COMIC TO KEEP AN EYE ON:

Episode 3 (titled “OutKast”) of “Lanterns” will delve into the backstory of the DCU’s John Stewart. One important element that has been present in most modern iterations of the character (his military background) was first introduced by Bruce Timm in 2001’s “Justice League” animated series, but wasn’t made a part of the character’s origin in the source material until a 2007 comic from Geoff Johns’ acclaimed run as the writer of the “Green Lantern” series.

Green Lantern Vol. 4 #26 (cover dated February, 2008).
*Very fine raw copies can be found online for $3.20 USD.
Partial retcon of the origin of Green Lantern John Stewart (New Earth) that now includes Stewart being a former U.S. Marine.
BONUS 1: First cover appearance and first in-story team appearance of the Alpha Lanterns (Boodikka, Chaselon, Green Man, Kraken & Varix), a new elite division of the Green Lantern Corps made up of Green Lanterns who have undergone a procedure to become cybernetic and fused with their Power Batteries. The Alpha Lantern Corps act as the Internal Affairs division of the Green Lantern Corps, investigating any Green Lanterns who may have potentially breached Corps law.
BONUS 2: Death of Yellow Lantern Amon Sur (son of Green Lantern Abin Sur).

FIRST MARVEL MEETINGS:
Comics featuring the first meeting of major Marvel characters.

With “Dr. Nathan Milbury” set to be the main antagonist of the upcoming “X-Men” reboot, the first time that the villain and the Mutant heroes meet is probably a comic for interested collectors to look out for.
*N.B.: The obsession that Mr. Sinister has with both Cyclops and Jean Grey makes the comic featuring their first meeting especially important.

Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 #243 (released December 20th, 1988).
*Very fine raw copies can be found online for $10.75 USD.
First meeting of Mr. Sinister (Nathaniel Essex) and the X-Men.
*N.B.: While Mr. Sinister made several appearances before “Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 #243”, he kept his existence hidden from the Mutant team.

COMICS TO KEEP AN EYE ON:

Daniel Richtman/“DanielRPK” claims that the Golden Age android Human Torch will appear in “VisionQuest”.
“Feature First” has added to the claim by reporting that the character will “only feature in one episode of the series, and his creator will play a larger role”.
The comic books linking the Golden Age android Human Torch and the Silver Age android Vision might be good books to look out for.
*UPDATE (September 25th, 2026): A new promo for “VisionQuest” gives viewers a look at a mysterious figure engulfed in flames (believed to be the MCU’s android Human Torch).

Avengers Vol. 1 #134 (released January 21st, 1975).
*Fine/Very fine raw copies can be found online for $24 USD.
Beginning of the origin of the Silver Age android Vision (later linking the Silver Age android Vision to the Golden Age android Human Torch/Jim Hammond).
*N.B.: The “Key Collector App” incorrectly claims that “Avengers Vol. 1 #134” is the issue that Vision discovers that his body was created from Jim Hammond, but this revelation actually occurs in “Avengers Vol. 1 #135”.

Avengers Vol. 1 #135 (released February 18th, 1975).
*Very fine raw copies can be found online for $43 USD.
The Silver Age android Vision discovers that his body was created from the Golden Age android Human Torch/Jim Hammond (the transformation was done by Jim Hammond’s creator, Phineas Horton, under extreme duress from Ultron-5).
*N.B.: “Avengers Vol. 1 #135” contains the full origin of the Silver Age Vision.
