I’ll let you be in my dreams if I can be in yours - Carolyn Drake and Andres Gonzalez 🪸

Works continues on Fable of Industry. I’m thinking of another title: Creation Story. What say you? Too early to tell? The naming process seems to help me through the project.

I find photo sequencing to be lyrical like poetry or a special section of prose. There’s always a connective thread between the images. Sometimes it may stretch very thin, but it should still be there, if only as a feeling.

More from Built on Ashes. Shot on Ilford film.

I’m shopping this project around this year, hopeful to find the right home to produce a book. Please let me know if you’d like to know more about my work.

‘In the morning, we dash along the sidewalks – you on your side, me on mine, watching as people cross the busy street.’

In I’ll let you be in my dreams if I can be in yours, photographers and longtime partners Carolyn Drake and Andres Gonzalez embark on a collaborative journey along the US–Mexico border, creating an imaginative portrait of life in these borderlands. Traversing towns and waterways together they photographed the same subjects from different perspectives, capturing everyday scenes that appear both staged and ad hoc.

The resulting series of uncanny image pairings illuminates the serendipity of human connection while confronting the challenges of relating to one another, finding balance, and defying conventional identities.

Through this striking sequence, Drake and Gonzalez reflect on their different family histories of migration and identity and the ways their backgrounds both intersect and diverge. Deliberately eschewing the temptation to follow a singular narrative or freeze a fleeting moment in time, their images instead suggest the multifarious nature of existence along the border.

I’ll let you be in my dreams, if I can be in yours..✨
Who wouldn’t be drawn to this poetic title, borrowed from Bob Dylan?
This book is brilliantly enigmatic:

…Traversing towns and waterways along the US-Mexico border, in this collaborative project photographers Carolyn Drake and Andres Gonzalez create an imaginative portrait of life on borderlands.

Photographing the same subjects from different perspectives, they capture dualistic accounts of scenes that appear both staged and ad hoc.

The resulting series of often uncanny pairings evokes the joys and challenges of human relations. In the background are Drake's and Gonzalez's different family histories of migration and the ways these histories intersect and diverge.

Selected by Grace Lawson, Events & Communications Coordinator @airsandgrace

“Drake and Gonzales’ images are an absolutely breathtaking example of storytelling through photography. Switching effortlessly between documentary portraiture, landscape, and staged still lifes, the artists paint a deeply intimate, melancholic, and, ultimately, very human picture of life along the border that can resonate with all people. I fell in love with Drake and Gonzales’ work during ARTS Southeast’s recent exhibition, “Tomorrow and Yesterday: Selections from The Do Good Fund,” so I was absolutely thrilled to spend time with this book. It’s an absolute must-buy for any photo book collection.”
