$This is what a woman looks like after playing approximately 47,000 flute solos in one weekend. 😂 The reward? A venti matcha latte. One pump of sugar-free vanilla. Light ice. Because apparently this is how I celebrate putting my brain through an Olympic-level obstacle course. 🍵💚 But seriously. This weekend with the Colorado Symphony was one of those experiences that reminds me exactly why I became a musician. Stravinsky’s Le Baiser de la Fée, Ravel’s Valses nobles et sentimentales and La Valse, and Leonard Bernstein’s Serenade, featuring the wonderfully dramatic Vadim Gluzman. All under the baton of Andrew Litton, with whom it felt absolutely fantastic to make music again. And holy hell, did this orchestra PLAY. There is something profoundly exhilarating about making music at this level. This repertoire demands extraordinary concentration, technical mastery, intellectual agility, and a kind of collective connectivity that is almost impossible to describe. Every person on that stage has spent a lifetime developing their craft, and when all of those highly trained brains start firing together, something remarkable happens. You get to trust everyone around you. Completely. And what a privilege that is, especially when everyone around you is so damn GOOD. I love the complexity. I love the challenge. I love having to stretch my brain to its limits, knowing that the people surrounding me are doing exactly the same thing. Our brains are these extraordinary high-performance machines, and making symphonic music at this level is one of the most beautiful ways I can imagine putting them to work. It’s not just about playing the notes. It’s about the astonishing amount of human cognition, sensitivity, discipline, intuition, and connection required to make those notes become something greater than any one of us could create alone. I am so incredibly proud of the Colorado Symphony, and so grateful to share a stage with these musicians. I hope our audiences felt even a fraction of the electricity we felt up there.$
