Bridge Crossing Jubilee | 60th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday
Selma, Alabama 📍

What exactly is the significance of commemorating a moment from history? At a time when so many basic events from our collective history is under attack, can we risk losing even more of our connection to our past?

Commemoration is part celebration and there were plenty of moments for joy. The resilience and grit of people in a city almost frozen in time is inspiring yet somewhat heartbreaking.

Commemoration is part sober reflection and calibration.

Lorde warned that we can’t use the master’s tools to dismantle the master’s house.

Has the needle moved? Can we recall the resistance of our ancestors? Has modernity, technology and capitalism poisoned us beyond consciousness?

White supremacy and neofascism are here on full display knocking on the door. Are we prepared to stand up for the marginalized? The Black, the refugee, the immigrant, the queer, the Palestinian, the poor?

Are we only prepared if the knock is on our own door? Will it then be too late?

These days I find myself at a loss for words. But the intention to resist the ugliness around me is still the same. I am grateful to have traveled to Selma and to share space with so many that are still committed to fighting. We may not always agree on how that fight may look, but still, our resistance is critical.

Somewhere there at the intersections of justice, history, faith, education/ academia the force of change exists.

And I’m grateful to the amazing people I’ve had the pleasure of learning from @unionseminary .

In 2020, in the height of the covid epidemic, I was honored to introduce the 40th mayor in the great @cityofnewarknj -- our mayor, the Honorable Ras J. Baraka!

Last night, in an auditorium packed with families, activists, educators, judges, political leaders and Newarkers from every ward, @mayorbaraka delivered a passionate, joyful, motivational and triumphant community-centered message of hope, resilience and promise in his 10th annual State of the City Address last night @njpac!

This morning I shared pieces of my introduction and some highlights from last night. Newark is "Moving Forward" and we are excited to be a part of it!

2024 is a milestone year for me. This year I celebrate the 30th Anniversary of “The Ultimate” my first release as a Recording Artist and Emcee! I got my start in December of 1993 when my Father gave me a Dr. Rhythm 550 for Kwanzaa. I immediately got to work writing and recording my first song “The Ultimate.” Then, in 1994 shortly after recording the track, I got signed to the independent record label, BMX Entertainment based in Brooklyn, New York. “The Ultimate” was released on BMX Entertainment in 1994…30 years ago. #HipHopHistory

(Note: My first release was recorded on a Dr. Rhythm 550, and later tracks were recorded at Planet Studios New York).
