Absolutely honoured to have our film nominated and to attend the 2026 Canadian Screen Awards @thecdnacademy, along with our star @jaydouglasmusic, director @gramantics and producer @andrewmunger!

Though we didn’t walk away with a trophy, almost more important is being nominated alongside some truly incredible documentary films and filmmakers, and the recognition by our peers. Congrats to all fellow nominees and we look forward to continuing to share our film and our stories on stages big and small!

What a night and celebration of Canadian documentary and unscripted films and TV! Honoured to attend my first Canadian Screen Awards @thecdnacademy with our film @playitlouddoc’s nomination for “Best Arts or Biography Documentary”. We didn’t win, but for me, the acknowledgment and recognition by peers and celebrating alongside the star of our film @jaydouglasmusic and long time friends, collaborators and fellow filmmakers, is what it’s all about.
👏 to my nominated film friends @brynkhughes @alidubya @chudsonhwang @therealgoldelox @directorngardy @sheldonshawprod @gdubya3 @ryansidhoo @whoslujo @delcowie @ajleitchdotcom @ajahnischarley @katevollum @serville_

As documentary filmmakers, it takes years of sweat, passion and unforgettable milestones seeing your film make it to the finish line and watched by audiences – so I shout out my fellow nominees and winners in championing our ability to continue making sure we tell our stories and making sure voices of our communities are heard and celebrated.

*and the tie I’m wearing is one of the few items of my grandfather given to me by my grandmother - a man I never met, who passed away in his 30s, but who's soul I carry and who's musical talent (an organist who toured across Jamaica from our hometown of Buff Bay, Portland, JA on request of many churches) is part of the long legacy of music in our family that I aim to carry on in my own small way.
(zoom in - I see audio waveforms in his tie) 🇯🇲

**and thank you @shopsydneys for taking my suit out by 2 sizes in time for the awards 🫣

What an incredible film! I’m so glad @accahamilton hosted the screening of @playitlouddoc at @westdalecinema as part of #BlackHistoryMonth. My whole family enjoyed it.

The beautifully shot documentary tells the little known story of how Jamaican music became a critical and unlikely part of Canadian culture. The film reveals a social and cultural migration that made Canada a mecca for Jamaican music, recognized around the world, but little heralded at home. This story is told through the life, music, struggles and triumphs of beloved Jamaican Canadian singer Jay Douglas.

Born as Clive Pinnock, in rural Jamaica to a single mother, Douglas began performing professionally at 17 and has never stopped. Today, nearly 60 years later, he’s more popular than ever. Douglas’ life mirrors the emergence of Jamaican popular music, both in its birthplace, and his adopted country. He’s a witness and participant to the birth of ska and reggae, the Jamaican out migration to the UK and Canada, and the flowering of a uniquely Canadian Black music.

Keeping on the Jamaica vibes,I want to share a documentary our friend @andrewmunger has been working on. Screening Friday, January 24 at the Revue. Get your tickets today. Follow their socials for more info. The double album set titled Jamaica to Toronto: Soul, Funk &Reggae 1967-1974 compiled by Cipreano and @lightintheatticrecords is off the charts fantastic too!

Play It Loud! How Toronto Got Soul
.
“Early 1960’s Toronto was a mostly white, Anglo-centric city.
Beneath this veneer of Conservative respectability, an exciting underground music scene emerged, created by a Jamaican diaspora including newcomers like Jackie Mittoo, Wayne McGhie and a teenage Jay Douglas. Battling racism and indifference, they made an indelible, but little appreciated mark on Canadian music and culture. Six decades later, Jay Douglas is still carrying the torch for Jamaican music, and enjoying the recognition and respect he has long deserved.”
