‘ In February 2026 I was walking along the beach at Dunwich and discovered thousands of ‘bones’ of cuttlefish washed up on the exceptionally high tide, along with other debris, driftwood and plastic waste.

Being a natural collector, I picked up several bags of them thinking I could use them in some way, and after researching these curious creatures I discovered they could be used for casting, since the shell-like material can withstand high temperatures of molten metal.

By happy accident (which 1 rely on a lot) I saw that there was a workshop for’cuttlebone casting using pewter, led by artist Poppy Jackson in Diss, and from there I discovered the mysteries of carving, casting and exploring form at micro scale.

More generally I explore nature, history & places through writing, images, and objects, looking for meaning and unexpected connections through time and place.’ Andrew Smith

EDGE LAND WORKSHOP: PLACE AND CHANGE: WRITING FROM THE HEART AND MIND, SATURDAY 3 OCT IP16 4ES - with our wonderful hosts at the fabulous Long Shop Museum

In this workshop Vicky Proctor and I will be your guides as we explore the link between place and memory, and the connections between heart and mind and writing - such rich ingredients for the alchemy that is writing.

Whether you are writing memoir, fiction, poetry, non fiction or scriptwriting (Vicky will be your guide in that) - we hope this workshop will add to your writers' toolkit. And it is always fun to write in good company, isn't it.

There are a few tickets left for this event. The workshop is fully accessible, with accessible toilets and a steal at £6 per person - for which we have the wonderful Sustainable Development Fund of the Suffolk & Essex Coast & Heaths National Landscape to thank. And it could not be more appropriate as we explore our relationship with this beautiful coastal landscape.

Part 2. Walking backwards at Orford Ness. Behind the scenes video, showing moments from the 4hours walk with the amazing @edge__land group.

The actual documentation of the performance art potentially will be shown in one of the future exhibitions by the Edge Land. TBC.

What started like a fun task, prompted by a performance art a year ago with @sebarnet (walking backwards on top of Bomb Ballistic), has ended up as a 4 hour exploration backwards of the same location. Simple act of walking backwards sparked deep conversations between us and with other visitors at the @orfordnessnt.

So much to think about. What are your thoughts?

Thank you to all volunteers for such enthusiasm and encouragement. Thank you for my friends for holding my hand when it was needed and for the guidance for the obstacles ahead.

Edge Land workshops kick off on Saturday (19 Sep). We'll be exploring ways of seeing the landscape, focussing on the senses. I'll write more about this in a future post – as well as being a writer, I have a background in neuroscience and am fascinated by the science of creativity. But in the meantime, it's enough to say that the senses will provide a supple framework for writing about the landscape. Come and discover more on Saturday.

In answer to a few queries – the workshops are fully accessible, with an accessible toilet close by. There will be a short break half way through – secretly, this is one of the most important parts of the workshop; it gives your thoughts time to settle, and for your subconscious to process and reorder thoughts, ready for the supported writing activity that follows.

Meet your tutors – Vicky Proctor and I are your writing tutors this Saturday from 10.00-13.00, at The Long Shop Museum, Leiston, IP16 4ES.

Vicky says: "Attending these workshops is an opportunity to think deeply and creatively about connection to the place we live. Whether we realise or not, we are embedded in the landscape, and Suffolk is a unique county for so many reasons. Considering this, it can be exciting to explore how home is important to us.

"As a practitioner, I am excited to learn from the people I work with in whatever capacity. Everyone has a different perspective.

"These four Edge Land workshops offer a way to explore and give creative voice to our feelings, in an atmosphere of gentle encouragement, inspiration and guidance from workshop leaders, but also peers within the group. The workshops are a chance to find community and learn how others are responding to the changes that are happening to the landscape on our doorstep."

Vicky Proctor grew up in Suffolk, spending her formative years roaming the coast and surrounding landscape. She is a writer, scriptwriter and workshop leader, currently working towards a PhD exploring the complicated relationship between humour and mental health. Vicky also runs creative writing workshops at her local Mind hub.

I am delighted that some of my artist’s books will be on display at the NORWICH INDEPENDENT BOOK & ZINE FAIR at The Forum, Norwich NR2 1TF on Saturday 16th May 9am - 5pm, as part of the Iceni BookArt Collective stand including ‘Seahenge’ 15 x 15 cms closed, 15 x 60 open, mixed media, with a driftwood tie. In 1998 on a quiet North Norfolk beach, an extraordinary 4000 year old Bronze Age timber circle was discovered. A huge upturned tree stump was at the centre surrounded by 55 timber posts that would have been around 3m in height. In total the diameter of the circle was 6.6m. 4000 years ago Holme beach was a salt marsh not a sandy beach. Over time the sea encroached the land and covered the peat beds that were naturally preserving the timbers. Despite local and national opposition, the timbers were removed from the beach in order to preserve this special monument. The original upturned tree stump and some of the original timbers now reside at Kings Lynn museum where they have also recreated a life-size timber semi-circle Seahenge replica to give you an idea of the circle’s original size. #mixedmedia #printmaking #gelplateprinting #collage #bookart #artistsbooks #bookbinding #norfolk #coast #northnorfolkcoast #ancientmonument #bronzeage #seahenge #holme @LynnMuseum
