Some trips stay with you long after you come home. Our days in the Kei Islands last May were one of those. Everything was amazingly beautiful in its own way — the unbelievably soft white sand of Ngurbloat, the quiet beauty of Ngiarwarat in Ohoidertawun, and then Ngurtafur. That one was simply mind-blowing. Walking on a stretch of white sand in the middle of the sea, with seemingly no one else around but the four of us, felt almost unreal. A little piece of heaven on earth, but more than anything, a moment when we were simply together, completely present, knowing we were experiencing something very special as human beings and a family.

Kei stayed with us for more than its beauty. In Ohoidertawun, Jabari and Qisya saw a mosque and a church standing close to each other. We had the chance to meet local people and see a little of everyday life beyond the beaches. Jabari and Qisya also played with the wonderful children there. It was my family's first time in Maluku and my first time experiencing Maluku simply as a traveller rather than through work.

Months later, we still talk about Kei. Grateful that we chose this beautiful corner of Indonesia, but even more grateful that we got to discover it together. My husband said that the journey somehow gave him a new sense of what truly matters in life. Sometimes it takes going somewhere far away, slowing down, and simply being together to remind us that a meaningful life may have less to do with what we have, and much more to do with the moments we truly share.
