Opening today! Thursday, October 1, 2026, 7pm Paintings Gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna Andy Hope 1930 in: „The Great Michelangelo Is Dead! Avant-Garde and Academicism“ The exhibition aims to give new form to an age-old debate. It will not use academicism a pejorative label for all that is outdated, nor credit the avant-garde with a monopoly on the new. Rather, the objective is to uncover the creative dynamic playing out between these two poles – both in a deep historical perspective and as it currently demarcates positions in the field of contemporary art. „The Great Michelangelo Is Dead! Avant-Garde & Academicism“ presents a selection of major works of European painting from the sixteenth century onwards, rounded out by significant loans, in dialogue with prominent positions in contemporary art. Besides a large number of originals, it also features copies – a segment of the legacy collection largely devalued by the avant-garde’s cult of originality – and contemporary works, some of which have been created specially for the exhibition. This arrangement is meant to draw attention to a specific quality of contemporary art since the 1960s: that it conceives of the copy no longer as a mere reproduction or teaching aid but as an artistic medium in its own right, one that employs strategies of appropriation and re-enactment to implement academic practice as an avant-garde method. In this context, Andy Hope presents a new painting from the series „Courbette Industria“, in which he transforms his ongoing exploration of Gustave Courbet’s „Bolting Horse“ (1861) into a contemporary reinterpretation of this enigmatic historical work of art, drawing on his very own visual language influenced by science fiction and avant-garde. „The Great Michelangelo Is Dead! Avant-Garde & Academicism!“ is curated by Helmut Draxler – with curatorial contributions by Hans-Jürgen Hafner and Claudia Koch. On view at the gallery Andy Hope 1930 SECOND ECHO Including a brand new group of works from his ongoing series UNTITLED SEQUENCES. „The often thickly applied surfaces of the UNTITLED SEQUENCES (2026) appear massive, not to say rich in mass. The compositions – sprayed with light-colored paint onto canvas or canvas board – follow partly scientific models and partly intuitive shortcuts. Other references include the minimalist painting of the 1960s. The picture is as follows: The sprayed dots create a blurred space that comes back into focus at the edges of the paintings, similar to a rangefinder.“ Andy Hope 1930 Come and see! Now open! Andy Hope 1930 SECOND ECHO – The exhibition brings together selected works spanning 30 years of artistic practice, with a brand-new group of spray-painted dot paintings from the ongoing series Untitled Sequences in the centre. SECOND ECHO is the artist’s ninth solo exhibition with the gallery. The first, Down the Hollywood Line, took place exactly 25 years ago in September 2001 and was also the first exhibition of the former Maschenmode project space as a commercial gallery under its new name. SECOND ECHO thus marks a double anniversary: 25 years of collaboration between artist and gallery, and 25 years of Galerie Guido W. Baudach. Come and see! My third day of art in Berlin is behind me. Today really had it all: from wonderful to poor, from moving to downright embarrassing, from bold to simply elegant and pretentious. Some works inspired me, some left me puzzled, and some made me wonder how they ever ended up on the wall in the first place. Baudach presents the exhibition SECOND ECHO by Andy Hope 1930 as part of this year’s Berlin Art Week. SECOND ECHO is the artist’s ninth solo exhibition with the gallery. The first, Down the Hollywood Line, took place exactly 25 years ago in September 2001 and was also the first exhibition of the former Maschenmode project space as a commercial gallery under its new name. SECOND ECHO thus marks a double anniversary: 25 years of collaboration between artist and gallery, and 25 years of Galerie Guido W. Baudach. Many congratulations to Guido and Andy on a quarter century of collaboration. ◼️◾️▪️   Andy Hope 1930 (*1963 in Munich) lives and works in Berlin. His works have been included in many major international exhibitions and are held in numerous private and public collections at home and abroad. From 2 October 2026, new works by him will be on view in the exhibition The Great Michelangelo is Dead!
