Thank you again for all who already have attended The Socials'. We hope the introduction of the new series of informal get togethers in Barnsley connecting artists, art professionals and those with a creative practice or wishing to develop one, have been beneficial to you.

We are on a mission to map who is part of the creative fabric of Barnsley and explore what is needed to help people thrive.

The next session Tuesday 18th July

The Gallery @ The Civic

We have Markmark productions who have a reputation for developing engaging visual, comic, street-spectacles and shows. They also tour internationally and over the last 25 years have performed all over the world to thousands of happy audiences, sharing their knowledge and best practice.

#DayThree
By July of 2011 BasementArtsProject had taken the step of looking at ways to start introducing people to art networks in Leeds through other means with a 10k ArtRun that stopped off for activities at a number of venues around the city before ending at another residential art project in LS6 for what was termed the Woolgather Olympics.

After this we realised our first open call and group exhibition in the form of Speakeasy: art in an age of prohibition. The exhibition looked at ideas of freedom of speech and how artists manifest such ideas through their work.

The Image is of work by Andy Nijinsky which takes the racist epithet of ‘There ain’t no black in the Union Jack’ and subverts it by removing all of the white whilst reproducing the Stars and Stripes entirely in black.

SPEAKEASY: art in an age of prohibition
Preview: Saturday 24th September 2011
SPEAKEASY:art in an age of prohibition is an exhibition that looks at artists ideas of freedom of speech featuring sculpture, performance, video, painting and text works by twelve artists, selected by Bruce Davies and Derek Horton and presented in the intimate domestic setting of Leeds’ smallest art space.

The original intention of the 1920’s speakeasy in the USA during the Prohibition was to distract attention from the illicit activity going on within. In its darkened cellar space, here the intention is the opposite: to expose and illuminate art that concerns itself with the need to speak out.

Declarations, manifestos, promises, assertions, whether political or personal, and whether outspokenly voluble or quietly intimate, are at the heart of this work. Its modest scale and humble venue belie its value and importance as a reminder of the imperative of freedom: freedom to think, speak, act and love.
