Hi. My name is Travis Shaffer --> but you might only know me as theretherenow

This has been my artist persona for the last 8 years.

My last solo exhibition was now more than 6 years ago - I used to be an artist who does pieces --> now only an artist who makes books

theretherenow began as a curatorial program housed in a project gallery i co-ran with then colleague @n_b_ . I down-play theretherenow as the practice of an individual often by using the aspirational "we".

Sometimes that "we" actually references studio assistants, grad students, colleagues, collaborators. But functionally, theretherenow is a person as much as a press. For better or worse, I touch every piece of paper that makes its way into theretherenow books.

So, I figure it is time for an introduction --

I have been making artist books since 2008 - mostly ED RUSCHA knock-offs.
I joined @artistsbookscooperative in 2010
I published my first book using RISO in 2016 with @anewnothing @mrnatward @benalper. The RISO was printed for me by @issuepress.

I got a small grant for a riso that same year and immediately printed a color chart.

I bought a white drum hoping it would be ideal for my personal project -- WHITE WORK -- a deadpan and cynical visual study of the aesthetics of white(ness).

That didn't really work since white ink is transparent.

In 2017/8 my family commited to this place long-term (wife and photographer @angtakesphotos and kid .. and eventually COVID dog who is crazy)

I published THERE, THERE and much more... and started doing fairs as Theretherenow @detroitartbookfair @printedmatter_artbookfairs @offprint_projects etc.
I upgraded from 2 MZs to what is now my MIDWEST RISO EMPIRE @therisoroom where we have 26 Color Drums (not all working :) and 3 printers.

I became a tenured Professor of Visual Studies at @mizzou_svs in Columbia, MIssouri last year and am investing my energy into growing MFA support for PUBLISHING as PRACTICE students and building an interdisciplinary publishing lab..

I started [color/shift] in 2020 and launched CMYKinda* shortly after.

Someday I will finish it - ish.

In honor of International Women’s Day, I want to highlight the work of Sara J. Winston @sarajwinston and her interest in the book form. This is part of a collective action to support Women photographers who continue to face a great deal of inequality in the field of art & design.

Sara J. Winston is an artist based in the Hudson Valley region of New York. She works with photographs, text, and the book form to describe and respond to chronic illness and its ongoing impact on her body, mind, family, and memory. Sara is the author of several photobooks, among them Shades (Push Pull Editions, 2023), A Lick and a Promise (Candor Arts, 2017) and Homesick (Zatara Press, 2015). Sara is the Photography Program Coordinator at Bard College; faculty at the Penumbra Foundation Long Term Photobook Program; a contributor to Lenscratch; and a member of Storm King Art Center‘s Accessibility Advisory Group. Her long-term project about multiple sclerosis care, Our body is a clock, was adapted and published as an op-ed in the New York Times, titled ‘My body is a clock’: The Private Life of Chronic Care.

“When I make photographs I’m always thinking about how they might make sense in the book form. Either alongside photographs I’ve already made, or, in sequence with photographs that I will make in the future.”

Featured here are Shades and Good Weather.
Shades, published in the fall of 2023 by Push Pull Editions began as an online image-based dialog between Aaron Canipe and Sara J. Winston on A New Nothing from October 4th, 2017 through July 29, 2023. Shades presents the parallel paths of Aaron and Sara as they each traverse the experience of raising their children. The photographs are interspersed with text by Nat Ward co-founder of A New Nothing.

Good Weather, published in the Winter of 2024 by National Monument Press is a series of photographs made in Mohall, North Dakota in the summer of 2009. Mohall is 22 miles south of Saskatchewan and 90 miles east of the Montana border. Her great grandparent’s homesteaded in Mohall at the turn of the 20th century; her mother was born there; and her relatives continued to live there until 2018.

Happy Birthday, Nat Ward. In the ranking of top favorite people to eat a sandwich with and one of our first & oldest pals in the city. May your new year be filled with strong coffee, heart breaker poems, photo making, and a gift card to @tigerschulmanns #natward #anewnothing
