Sri Lanka cricket needs a clear vision, not short term solutions.

Lahiru Udara scored a magnificent 188 in his 2nd series. After a disappointing series against India, he was dropped. One good series doesn’t make a player great, and one poor series shouldn’t define his future.

The real question is? Are we building players, or simply replacing them?

First, evaluate the entire system from school cricket and clubs to high performance centres. Identify the weaknesses, assess workloads, clarify responsibilities, and address the gaps. Categorise players according to their strengths and suitability for Test, ODI and T20 cricket, then develop them with clear plans, proper guidance and consistent opportunities.

Build a strong group of players under Kusal Mendis for each format, then train and condition them specifically to prepare for it. Some players may be able to play two formats, while others may be able to play three. First, identify which players can do so.
Recruit the best people for every role based on qualifications, experience, and ability not friendships. Invest in quality coaching, embrace fresh ideas, and adapt as the game evolves.

We cannot keep celebrating our golden era while failing to address today’s challenges. Talent identification is only the beginning; player development is the real responsibility.

Stop looking for short-term fixes. Evaluate the system, fix the problems, and build a sustainable future. Sri Lanka has the talent, we need the right people, the right structure, and a clear vision to turn that talent into long term success.
