Pūatatangi Productions is delighted to announce that it has received He Kauahi – Catalyst Short Film Funding from Te Tumu Whakaata Taonga | New Zealand Film Commission for its next short film, Reretau.

Reretau is co-written by Allie Howell and Pūmanawa Rawiri, directed by Allie Howell, and produced by Angel Kameta.

Pūatatangi Productions is proud to announce its establishment as a dedicated screen production company, co-founded and co-directed by Allie Howell and Angel Kameta.

Building on the success of the creative team’s early projects, including Ata Pūao and Urban Taniwha, Pūatatangi has been established to create bold, Māori-led motion pictures for Aotearoa’s screen industry while providing a formal home for the teams growing slate of takatāpui film productions.

While Pūatatangi and E Kare Collective will continue to collaborate on future projects where appropriate, the two organisations serve distinct purposes. Pūatatangi is dedicated exclusively to screen production, while E Kare Collective continues its evolution as a multidisciplinary arts collective supporting a broader range of creative practices and artists.

As production begins on its inaugural slate, Pūatatangi looks forward to contributing to the future of Aotearoa’s screen industry while continuing to celebrate the takatāpui, iawhiti, and MVPFAFF+ community that made its journey possible.

The sun is setting on this chapter of Dawn.

After 4 years of hand sewn looks, fab functions and potluck dinners, it is through much reflection that we have collectively decided to close The Avant House of Dawn.

What began as a couple of drag queens turning up to FAFSWAG’s Final Fantasy Ball in 2019 has since grown into an inimitable Ballroom House and a lifelong whānau. Grounded in collective care, creativity, history, and chosen family, we are incredibly proud of what we have shared and built together as a house.

In honouring the legacy of what it means to be a Ballroom House, we felt it was important to recognise that this era has naturally come to an end. Our members continue to embark on individual evolving paths, and in light of this, it feels like the right time to close this chapter with care and intention.

While our time as a Ballroom House has come to an end, our future as chosen family has not. Our lives remain intertwined, and we will continue to nurture, support, and show up for one another and our wider community.

We are deeply grateful to ballroom - the community and the culture - for being the catalyst that brought us together. We are so proud to have been a House that has impacted, contributed, and been an integral part of this community. Most of all, we look forward to seeing our individual journeys unfold, and ballroom in Aotearoa continue to thrive.

00, 00!

With love,
House of Dawn

E Kare Collective at Māoriland Film Festival 2026.

Attending MFF last month was a real milestone for our rōpu. And we felt so much warmth and manaaki during our time in Ōtaki. E mihi ana ki a koutou, te iwi ahi kā; Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga. The energy from kaimahi, whānau, and the wider township was unmatched.

It was a real privilege to be in connection with global indigenous filmmakers. To conversate, and share cinema. We were so inspired by the whakaaro and mahi indigenous filmmakers are presenting across te ao. A beautifully diverse range of stories, risks being taken, and cinematic excellence being championed.

A highlight during our week was viewing the feature documentary AKI by Darlene Naponse (@darlenenaponse). What a beautiful acknowledgement of te taiao, community, reo, and time. This film pushed the boundaries of cinematic convention in such a way that remained utterly authentic. We left the festival with a commitment to explore this wero in our own practice, and we thank you for sharing it with us.

Till next time…
