In Kyoto, we went to a traditional tea ceremony. Upon arrival, they took us to a building across the street where we put on kimono underwear and socks you can wear with flip flops. Then we picked out a kimono 👘 and a sash we wanted to tie around our waist. Once they dressed us, we picked out flowers and they did our hair. Then we went back to the tea house and they taught us how to make matcha 🍵 the traditional way. Before drinking, to counter the bitterness, we ate a candy and a red bean triangular mochi, traditional to the area.

Our second day in Kyoto was spent in the northwest part. We started the day by hiking up a steep mountain 🏔️ in insane humidity 🥵 to hang with the monkeys in the Arashiyama Monkey Park. 🐒 You could get very close to the monkeys, but were told not to look them in the eyes or touch them. Then we checked out the area. We went in some shops, walked through the Kimono Forest and got sushi in a tiny restaurant. Next, we went on a boat ride on the Hozugawa river. 🛶 It was a beautiful, fun ride at the beginning that turned dark and wet for the second half of the ride. Thankfully, they had an entertaining guide, tarps that they put up around the boat, and towels to give us on our way out. We ended the day at the bamboo forest followed by some udon soup. 🍲

We pretty much went to Osaka for the food, so naturally we signed up for a food tour on Dontonbori street! Our tour guide, Allysa took us to a few different establishments (some sit down restaurants and some street food stands). Along the way we stopped at Shitenno-ji where Allysa taught us how to properly cleanse yourself and enter a temple. Tastings included: melon soda and fried seaweed chips, takyoyaki (octopus balls), akashiyaki (egg burrito with cabbage), yakisoba (grilled noodles), okonomiyaki (egg and cabbage savory pancake), Kobe beef sushi from an award winning female owned business, kushikatsu (you got to pick from a long list of foods that get fried up on a stick), and I ended with matcha ice cream with red bean sauce (not pictured). Now that we went for the food, I just want to go back! Perfect sized city, walkable and lively!

Our second stop was Osaka. We only spent one night there, but I fell in love with the vibrancy of Dontonburi street. Dontonburi is known as Japan’s kitchen and is an area with tons of restaurants, bars, and shops that offers a wide variety of street food.
