Kimagure Orange Road collage post featuring the mate @angelarchive.studio tee! And a thanks to @tokyokidcorp for the hookup on the main series VHS tapes! As my previous well loved copies looked rather war torn.. included in the post is the special edition poster created for Anime Expo 2000 signed by series character designer Akemi Takada and the OVA laserdisc (3 of 3) also signed by her at Anime America in 1994! And yes, the laserdisc does have some water damage, but I’m all about giving physical media a second chance that others may want to toss. Especially when it comes to owning any autos for KOR. As far back as I can remember this was one of my first 80’s series that I was really able to get into. Partly because I was able to complete a full set faster than most other series I was collecting at the time. It’s remained one of my most unique viewing experiences to this day, but I definitely think a good portion of my love for it comes down to nostalgia. Having rewatched it recently I can say the character growth/writing, pacing and even the romance aspect is kind of lacking… for me, Maison Ikkoku is the PRIME romcom. Which was airing at the same time as KOR (Maison started a year prior and ended at almost the same time as KOR’s main series). What KOR has on just about every other anime out there however is a really fun look into the 80s aesthetic. The series itself can be kind of goofy with how it tries to portray certain things in my opinion, but it’s a pretty solid time capsule of peak 80s vibes, the culture and the art is impeccable! Anything Akemi Takada does character designs and illustrations for will age like fine wine in that respect. From Urusei Yatsura to Creamy Mami and ESPECIALLY Patlabor. Her take on newer anime characters too really shows you that she should have remained in the space as a lead character designer. In 2025 she did an interview at Lucca Comics & Games, Europe’s largest comic convention held annually in the historic city of Lucca, Italy. In this very short interview she answered some questions mostly pertaining to her approach to character designs
