At the Conscious Grieving Retreat, created by therapist and author, Claire Bidwell Smith, you’ll be in the company of a team of hand picked practitioners who are in this work because they have been there, too. Each with their own gifts and guidance to share. And guests who show up to know what it means to live with loss.

This retreat offers the space and time to step away from the everyday for a little while. To make room for your grief and your person in a new and transformative way. To listen to yourself. To be heard and seen. To be witnessed by people who don’t need you to explain why it still hurts.

Horses don’t speak in words. They speak through their bodies and their nervous systems: a shift and weight, a soften eye, a breath released, a sudden illness. To connect with a horse, you have to slow down and settle your body. You have to become someone steady enough to be trusted. That’s the heart of the partnership. The horse relies on you, and you learn to rely on the horse. Trust has to be earned in both directions and it can’t be forced or faked. When a horse is truly heard, she becomes a full participant in this work. What she offers is honest, alive, and impossible to manufacture. #unbridledrising #equineassistedlearning #horsesheal

Every woman who has sat in this circle gets asked the same question when she gets home. What was it like?

Here is what some of them said.

Notice that none of them said fixed. They said unfolding. They said the word was too small. That is what it sounds like when the healing happens in the body first and the words come later, if they come at all.

There is a reason for that. A horse does not need you to explain the loss. It reads what you walked in carrying, and it stays. Then the circle: Claire Bidwell Smith and I hold the grief education, two grief therapists in one small room, with nothing to perform. A chef cooks. A sound bath floats you. Nobody asks you to be the strong one.

Healing with Horses. Thursday, October 22 to Sunday, October 25, in a private house in the Malibu hills. Eight rooms, fourteen beds. 25 years later, we remember the victims and the responders of September 11. We also acknowledge the trauma experienced by so many in the years since, including the children of that generation, who are adults now, still shaped by an event most were too young to fully understand at the time.

A new study out of Columbia University’s Department of Psychiatry, published in PLOS Mental Health, found that adult children of 9/11 responders diagnosed with PTSD were significantly more likely to develop depression, anxiety, and panic symptoms themselves, decades later, despite never witnessing the destruction firsthand.

Exposure to the original event was not the strongest predictor. What mattered more was the strength of the relationships around the child, family, friends, and community support, which was tied to outcomes as much as what the parent had directly experienced. Treating the person who lived through the trauma is not sufficient on its own. The systems around them need to be strong enough to hold what gets passed down.

The weight of a traumatic event should never be carried alone. ❤️

This isn’t a retreat about “moving on.” It’s about making space for your loss, your story, and the parts of you that are still learning how to carry it. Story-sharing circles, trauma-informed grief processing, gentle movement, nourishing meals from our private chef, and a small group of people who truly get it.
