Kicking off my birthday with a little dance! 🎂 I had the best time celebrating the Brooklyn way 🏙️🎉 My heart is so full thinking about all the amazing friends I’ve met in my first year here—so grateful for everyone who came through as we danced the night away to throwbacks (this millennial was a very happy camper).

FRIENDS IN NEW YORK

As I continue on this journey best known as adulting, I often find myself conflicted and at a crossroads with adult friendships. As we get older, we continue to strive towards ambitions and goals we set out for ourselves, often facing the bitter realities of sacrifice, challenges, life transitions (marriage, kids, relocation, busy schedules) and many lost relationships that have become slowly distant in the process. Safe to say my personal battle with this has been to bitterly embrace the adversities and moreso drunkenly stumble through this life learning to just roll with the ebbs and flows of adulting. This includes seeing many of my adult friendships come and go which always sucks as a quality time/physical touch love language person.

However, the older I get, the more intentional I learned to be with valuing the friendships that are no longer local. Overall, no matter how many times I have to hop on a couple flights, drive through unbearable traffic, not see or talk to someone for months on end, I'm grateful I can say aloha to friends wherever I go and NYC is no different.

Thanks Joy, Nuo, Angel, Sunny and Luke for your lifelong friendships and taking the time this trip to make my short time spent in NYC a blast as always! 🫰

Thank you to everyone who celebrated the launch of BIANCA @brooklynpoets this past Sunday! It was, in the best way, the opposite of my first book launch 9yrs ago. Sunday was a dream.

3 poets whose poems I could listen to all day— @mobrowne @ivertownandcountry @patrickrosal —set the tone, cut thru our hearts. @jasonykoo asked 3 BKP interns (@mr.dphelps @80smomchic @hunterhodkinson) to introduce each poet with a thoughtful blurb. They + @carolive & @infinitejess__ ran the night.

Jason couldn't make it due to family obligations, so he watched virtually & blew up the Zoom chat. My dear friend, brilliant poet @joan_kwon_glass emceed. Poetic bc I taught Joan's book, Night Swim, in my fall BKP workshop.

Poetic also bc when Joan found my 1st book & reached out years ago, she didn’t know I was at one of my lowest points, had given up on writing, didn't know if I’d ever write again. She, a stranger then, reminded me of my power, my voice.

Joan read an impassioned endorsement of BIANCA Jason had written. Then she shared her own moving testimony about me, my books. Her words made my husband cry.

Me? I dissociated. I knew I'd be a mess if I listened with my whole heart. But just now, I replayed the recording & sobbed.

That's the other thing. Jason thought to record the whole show. He made sure photos were taken. The interns at BKP got flowers for the occasion & arranged for Darius to surprise me with a vase full of them on stage. A line formed to get books signed.

Did you know I have only 1 photo from my 1st book launch? Of the bare red-lit stage in the basement of a bar.

That launch was well-attended. Mostly non-poets. I asked 2 poets who worked at @fourwaybooks to read. I was too insecure to ask anyone who wasn’t obligated to be there. I drank. Performed my poems. Then I stood in a corner & hardly talked to people. The inner imposter was wretchedly loud.

I didn’t know Jason or Joan then. Or many of the poets I know now. I couldn’t have imagined then the kind of poets—friends—I’ve come to know & love today.

I am still surprised by the whirlwind around BIANCA. One day, I will better articulate this nonstop feeling of shock. For now, so much fucking gratitude. 1. Had fun building this for my kids! 🤣🤣
My oldest loves to jump off stuff and be wild so I made this high enough where he could “get some air” and of course my youngest likes to follow everything his big brother does.

Threw a @nuggetcomfort cushion on top so they can hang out at the top. A simple RGB party light to make the inside pop. And of course put it by the sofa so they have a very soft landing!

Mother-daughter duo, Eleanor and Jona Ting, are native New Yorkers and owners of #Tings Gift Shop. The family gift shop first opened in 1958 in Manhattan Chinatown selling giftable items from around the world. It has become a staple in the Chinatown community as ownership has passed down from one generation to the next.
