POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
It all started with an email, an idea, a “should we do this?” Now, 2 years later, there are 3 million copies of books in print with the @gmabookclub seal, in local bookstores, in your hands, on nightstands. 16 of our picks were instant @nytimes bestsellers. Some are being made into movies, into series. But behind the stats, in-between the lines, is the greatest honor I’ve known, working with the best team in the business to showcase stories from so many different people, backgrounds, and experiences. Stories that make you think, make you laugh, cry, the stories that make you see the stranger next to you differently. Thank you to the authors who give us these stories, the publishers who amplify them, and thank you to our readers and all readers everywhere, for choosing adventure with every new story.

Our @gmabookclub team has become a family, a unit, and in turn, our own little book club, the ultimate bright spot. Our fearless leader and book fairy @alisonehrlich , speed reading queen @nadineshubailat , producing powerhouses @taylor.b.rhodes @amcmaster21 , social gurus @callingcaterina @sherful925 @angelinebernabe , and our intrepid captain, @sswinkgma

Keep the galleys coming, because we’re only getting started! ✍🏼📚

"To serve and protect"

As a nurse, I'm familiar with the seriousness of being sworn to an oath for your profession. It's serious, and it carries a lot of weight: it should govern your actions every single day--every single time.

Although mothers do not swear to any oath per se, we protect our children fiercely and relentlessly. But what if you couldn't protect your own child from the very people whose job it is to protect them? Every day I feel a heavy weight on my chest that leaves me feeling like I can't breathe--much like Eric Garner or George Floyd. Simply because my son was born black, he is viewed by law enforcement as a "prime suspect" or a "person of interest." Yes, I hear people talk about preserving life IN the womb, yet these are the same people who support policies that kill children OUTSIDE the womb.

I feel like he was marked for death in America before he was even born. He could be asleep at home, and police could kill him (Botham Jean and Breonna Taylor). He could be walking down the street or jogging and be killed (Trayvon Martin and Ahmaud Arbery). He could be playing music in his car and be killed (Jordan Davis here in Jacksonville). What a heartbreaking burden to bear--that you, as a mom, couldn't, protect your child.

On play dates most moms are relaxed and cordial. But I don't have that luxury because I know that even at two years old, my son will be labeled as "aggressive" by people who are not the same color as he is. He will be singled out because of his innate exuberance. And at some point he in their eyes, he will go from cute Nathan to a "thug." I'm aware that he will have to work "twice as hard for half as much." And at some point he won't be welcomed into the homes of the same little girls he's playing with now, because nobody will want their daughter dating him.

My beautiful black child doesn't deserve to be treated this way. Not one of them does!

I. CAN'T. BREATHE.
