For our August Newsletter, we interviewed @angeljd.art and got a deeper insight into what drives her into making art, being artist, and her thoughts on art in general.

What drives you to create art?

“I think the fact that my art can connect to some people because art is so transversal. You kind of have this worry, like, oh, will people understand it? or , oh, people won’t understand it. But I realised later it doesn’t really matter as long as it resonates with at least one person. That’s what motivates me the most, especially since my art is talking about a lot of vulnerable subjects and emotions.”

Why do you reference the Rorschach inkblot test? How does psychology and perception interact within your practice?

“I’m fascinated by the idea of how everyone’s lived experiences can be so different and cause all of these different reactions on what they see in very abstract art. I really want to write about it because it’s such an interesting subject. It is about thinking of how a person’s childhood influenced them to see that, or how their friends or family influenced them to the person they are [today] and that’s why they see this thing or they feel this emotion when they see random shapes pieced together. It can tell you about a person.”

Are there any recurring symbols or motifs that continue to appear in your practice?

“They are very subtle but I think faces or almost human humanoid figures [are recurring within my work]. Emphasis on the almost.

Before [my graduate project], I really tried to get into self portraiture. I liked the idea of trying to depict myself in very vulnerable forms but then I hit the end of second year [of university] and I wanted to branch into something different… I would draw myself in very vulnerable situations. There would be literal portraits of me cross or me doing nude art. Then that shifted into complete abstraction.

Abstract art has a more transversal and crea

In our August newsletter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Angel!

Angelica Dimelica is a Filipino visual artist based in Magandjin (Brisbane) focused on reading into the psyche by adopting the visual language of Rorschach tests. Utilising her understanding of perceptual and affectual theory, Angel creates abstracted drawings and sculptural forms that allow her to analyse the psychological aspects of being human through viewers' reactions.

Centred on emotion, she experiments with the sensory qualities of materials as a way to influence perception and emotion, alongside audiences’ reaction to the ambiguous forms.
