Παππού ♡ A proud Spartan and the great pillar of our family.

When Yiayia arrived in Australia, Pappou stood there waiting - the only man at the docks holding a bouquet of flowers. That devotion never faded. He passed away on their 68th wedding anniversary, waiting for one last kiss from her.

You crossed oceans so we could stand here today. Όλα για σένα, Παππού. I will spend my life making you proud.

Καλό ταξίδι, αγαπημένε μου Παππού 🕊️

Tonight's viewing. New Blu-ray release of Alexandre O. Philippe's 2024 feature documentary on one of the 1970s most seminal and provocative movies, horror or otherwise. There are so many classic genre movies out there, but THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (1974) is one that remains clearly in a league all of its own. CHAIN REACTIONS features input from Patton Oswald, Miike Takashi, Stephen King, Karyn Kusama, and the brilliant Alexandra Heller-Nicholas (with whom I had the immense pleasure of sharing the stage, along with Angela Ndalianis, for an introduction to a Cinemaniacs screening of TCM back in 2018). CHAIN REACTIONS is out locally through Umbrella Entertainment.

The subject of hybrids and mutations also informed the approach Angela took in creating the paintings for this exhibition. At the beginning of the year, she had a bad fall and broke her back. This traumatic experience, however, ended up having a positive effect on her art practice. The physical difficulties of traditional painting can take their toll on the body and she began instead to think differently about her approach to painting. Realising that, in the past, she’d kept her knowledge of digital and traditional tools separate, she decided to break down the walls and combine all, depending on her aims and needs.

Programs like Procreate and Photoshop combined with acrylic paint, rhinestones and fabrics offering exciting possibilities.

Meanwhile, AI became a creative tool and collaborator that opened the way to great versatility and experimentation that led to many of the characters and scenarios in this exhibition.

Welcome to Angela’s fantastical world where fur meets science, bone meets bling, and the velvet apocalypse begins.

G1 Angela Ndalianis - Supremacy of the Zombie Bunnies

@angndal

Angela Ndalianis is a Melbourne-based artist who transitioned to visual arts after nearly three decades as a professor of screen media and director of the Centre for Transformative Media Technologies at Swinburne University. During her distinguished academic career, she specialised in the study of entertainment genres such as horror and science fiction—fields that continue to inspire and inform her art practice today.

Working across analogue and digital forms, Ndalianis creates richly narrative, symbolically layered worlds that fuse popular culture, mythology, and the decorative. Her paintings have been exhibited at Brunswick Street Gallery, Fly Little Bird, Red Gallery, Gallery Unbound, and Linden New Art.

In November 2024, she presented her solo exhibition Divine Darkness: A Female Odyssey at Red Gallery, further establishing her presence within Melbourne’s contemporary art scene. Her current exhibition, Supremacy of the Zombie Bunnies, continues this trajectory, blending wit, spectacle, and mutation in a dazzling exploration of post-human imagination.

The paintings create a micro-spectacular aesthetic that’s influenced by baroque art. In addition to using acrylic paint, materials include fabrics and rhinestones with the artist acting as painter, designer and dressmaker. Adding to the spectacle, decorative, baroque-style retables or portable altars have been created by the artist to house some of the paintings, adding a theatricality to the overall experience.

G.1 Angela Ndalianis -Divine Darkness: a Female Odyssey

The darker figure is inspired by Lilith who, some sources tell us, was the first wife of Adam and a primordial she-demon who had an appetite for devouring humans. God threw her out of the Garden of Eden and into a wasteland. Some sources describe her as the Mother of Vampires, which is the version explored in the exhibition. In the 1960s, feminist theologian Judith Plaskow transformed her role from demon to powerful role model for women.
