Two years on testosterone today. It really hits me how fast time goes. I went from navigating my transition with the constant fear of mistreatment in high school to finally being able to truly see myself for who I am.

My gender and sexuality are not boxes that people can sort me into. They are fluid, and they change alongside me as I grow. People often assume that I use all pronouns because it’s easier, or that I’m scared to say that I’m a trans man. But I’m not a trans man. My gender has no rules, and that means other people don’t get to decide how I’m meant to express myself, even if I’ve chosen to medically transition.

Now, I can hear myself in videos and actually hear me, not the voice from before my transition. When I look in the mirror, I see the person I’ve always wanted to be.

Queer people are not safe in this country, and I’ve learned that being proud can also come with the risk of hate and discrimination. I’ve experienced some of that myself, and defending both myself and others takes so much bravery and patience. All I can do is hope that one day the world will change and stop viewing people like me as people who shouldn’t exist.

Queer people deserve sunshine, and I deserve sunshine too.
