Just over a week ago we wrapped this mammoth of a show. This cast will be my friends for life and I am in awe of each and every one of them, as well as the insanely talented and hardworking crew and creative team.
The post show blues are pretty intense with this one. Love you guys ❤️ #oralisland 📸 @smwimage @ @matthewcychen

i don’t think i’ll ever have words to capture exactly what this process and these people mean to me. i’m forever changed by the love and discipline and play in that room, as an actor who discovered how badly they want to continue to make truly risky and energetic theatre, and how rewarding it is to work in such a physical way. thank you to everyone who came to see that for themselves (particularly the people i love who put up with me refusing to talk about anything else for 9 months, and the new faces who reached out with very kind words).

one million thank yous to these beautiful people who i’m so lucky to have shared the beginnings of my boyhood with. i’m grateful to be grieving our time together.

ay ayy ayyyyy. 🐷

NEW REVIEW | LORD OF THE FLIES

I thought I knew what Lord of the Flies was about.

Steven Mitchell Wright’s production of Nigel Williams’s stage adaptation made me wonder whether I had it backwards.

Thrillingly theatrical and extraordinarily well performed, this Lord of the Flies does far more than modernise a familiar parable. Through the accumulation of Wright's choices: bodies, objects, accents, sound and image, another reading gradually floats to consciousness: perhaps the island does not reveal what remains once civilisation has been stripped away. Perhaps it shows how readily so-called civilisation reproduces its own violence under altered conditions.

You can take the boys out of Great Britain, but can you take “Great” Britain out of the boys?

Lord of the Flies is at Theatre Works until 2 October

Who do you play, and what do you have in common with your character?
I play Ralph. Ralph and I have a lot in common. We both grew up regionally and have a parent in the military, so there was a sense of familiarity with him when I first started building character.

Has anything discovered in rehearsal completely changed the way you understand your character?
Definitely - I’m having discoveries all the time on the floor. The boys have been incredibly generous with ideas and play in the room so we’re all naturally finding moments of inspiration.

If you could take one completely impractical comfort item to the island, what would it be?
My Switch. I’d play it at the top of a hill one night until the 3 hour battery was drained then I’d walk down to the beach and fling it into the ocean like a frisbee.

What is the first rule you would establish on the island, and how long do you think you would obey it?
First rule would be to stay together. I’d probably break it to go to the toilet.

What does your character believe they need in order to survive?
To never give up hope.

This has been one of the most intense and rewarding works I've ever been a part of. We have been training, devising, and rehearsing since January.
I am so SO looking forward to finally performing this absolute beast of a work next week. These guys are working their absolute arses off and we've got something mega special here.
