BIKIN: The Art of Making is Suzy Sulaiman’s open studio exhibition at CODE gallery, Faculty of Creative Multimedia, MMU. This open studio exhibition delves into Suzy Sulaiman’s artistic practice, that is mainly on commissions for large scale public art installations; a genre of art that has grown exponentially popular in Malaysia with the raise of civic consciousness and public spaces. Working in large scale art and in public spaces required a plethora of creative talents who all work towards a common vision. It is common for the artist to activate a pool of creative individuals to form a transient art collective. An artisanal atelier is created that facilitates learning and the transfer of artistic skills. The artist mitigates her perceptions on authorship, ownership and creative “control” are often negotiated and balanced with the collective.
As an open studio exhibition, BIKIN: The Art of Making functions as the studio base for the artist’s upcoming public art installation for Kreatif KL festival. The artisans work on various components of the artwork throughout the show. Visitors will get a chance to experience the art-making process and witness the behind-the-scenes process of public art installation-making. Previous art commissions, artwork from artist-in-residence in the Philippines and a new interactive sound art are also on exhibit. BIKIN: The Art of Making celebrates the concept of “doing-it with others’ (DIWO) an extension to the familiar DIY (doing-it-yourself) culture, simultaneously promoting making art together.

Haziq Jasreen, Rufiyan Ramli, Ang Yan Kai, Farahhani Azwa, Khor Kok Yao, Nur Shafiqah Nisha bt. Azad, Muhammad Haritshah b. Rahmat, Abby Natasha bt. Mustaffa, Krishnapriyah Verayah, Sarah Tasnim bt. Azli, Saood Khan, Muhammad Nabil,
Mohamad Amirul Haqim b. Rahmat, Tang Kit Lee, Haris b. Zaid and Anis Haron.

when i ask some local ipoh ppl they cakap the mountain is like that since long ago- cant do anything n duno why.... they feel takut also if go talk about it 👌🏼

🫶🏼 big thanks to MFF & JAS, i see the authority punya creative journalism contest about nature so why not, i try do something different - mountains maybe they will notice it

the entry got attention of REAL ONES on socmed but lost the contest (its OK) 👊🏼

Suma orientalis gallery found me thru socmed, give me chance to use their space to showcase my works, i wan put flying proton saga but heart tell me to go with this ipoh one 🫀

the gallery boss Sophia n Allan agreed to TAKE RISK TOGETHER 🫡🔥🔥💸

inspired by them i also continue travel back n forth ipoh in search for truth 🕵🏼‍♂️ i wan use my actions to show WE DONT HAVE TO BE 'environmentalist' or 'journalist' to care , bukan cakap SYOK saja 🎤

i met a lot of local grassroot legends around Kinta Valley 🐯- one of them: the OG Boon Tat who used 4 years to gather photos n info about mountains while juggling with works 💪🏼

🔬 as i dig deeper and interact with working class people from BOTH sides i unearthed a lot of interesting stories 💡 (macam botak mountains got name, 80% of ground under ipoh has same material, the materials also exist in our food like Maggi, accidents at blasting sites)

tbh i memang stress gila past 2 months prepping this while juggling with works (thanks team) but gained immense inner growth mentally 🙏🏼

initially i dun wanna go that deep but then i realise mountains got some amazing cave paintings from very long time ago.. 🤦‍♂️

can at least let people take photo ah before destroying it 😂📱 OK? 🫶🏼
