Mammals of Nyika National Park, Malawi 🇲🇼

Rolling grasslands, montane forests and some of Malawi’s most impressive wildlife.

Nyika is a little different from the classic African safari landscape. Up here, roan antelope roam the hills, Crawshay’s zebras graze across the plateau, and reedbuck can be found in the grasslands. There’s plenty more to discover, from bushbuck in the woodland to jackals moving through the open country.

It’s a remarkable place to explore with a camera, and there’s still so much to discover across this unique highland landscape.

A few of the mammals of Nyika. 🐾

Species featured:
• Roan antelope
• Reedbuck
• Bushbuck
• Side-striped jackal
• Tree hyrax
• Crawshay’s zebra

Nyika is home to around 85 mammal species, making it a fascinating destination for wildlife enthusiasts.

- For my birthday (October 10th), I visited Bradgate Park for the first time, where I took a couple of amazing photos of the deers there. Thank you to anyone who wished me a happy birthday. Over the next few days, I will release some shots I took.

The brown bear, also known as the common bear in Europe due to its widespread abundance, is a bear that is thriving across the entire continent. It got me thinking, if such a large and powerful animal is so ubiquitous, surely it has an interesting history - and I was right.

A quick look into the history of Ursus arctos is a treasure trove of human interaction with this incredibly powerful predator. In ancient Rome, these bears were used as fighting animals in the arenas, with the strongest and fiercest bears being sourced from the Scottish Highlands and around Croatia. Sadly now these bears are extinct in the UK and as habitat loss has affected them, the bears have been switching their diet too. In the Roman era, the bears were 80% carnivorous, through the middle ages this dropped to around 40% and modern brown bears are only 10% carnivorous.

Our fascinating history with the Bears continues, and they appear frequently in fairy tales and fables, famously in the tales collected by the brothers Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm. Furthermore, these bears have even been credited with fighting in a battle, with the Swedish army using them to destroy the Danes in the battle of Bravellir.

Common these bears may be, but what a wonderful rich history we have shared on this planet together. I hope humanities need for resources, space and ever increasing greed does not spell an end to such a widespread and large apex predator.

PS - I feel it is important to add here, no AI will ever be used in my imagery or my writing as these thoughts and photographs are entirely my own experiences, ideas and feelings on the world
