Finally wrapping up my Arizona trip photos with an assortment of lizards!

Some new ground squirrels! Got both the Harris' antelope squirrel for the first two photos, and the last one is of a round-tailed ground squirrel.

Cottontails come in a large variety of species, with most of the North American ones looking near identical. So what's the best way to tell them apart? Well, location. I've seen Eastern, Mountain, and even the endangered New England Cottontail in the wild, but this was my first time in Desert Cottontail habitat.

Up north where I normally work isn't really quail country, instead dominated by grouse. Most Arizona residents probably don't give the abundant Gambel's quails much of a thought, but for me, they were a nice new sight, and quite photogenic.

This is the best sighting I've ever had of Cooper's hawks! A breeding pair quite close to us before sunset. Didn't get good photos of the female since she was in a thick part of the trees, but I really like these ones of the smaller and darker male.

Being smaller may make him seem like a less proficient hunter, but in flight, it allows for greater speed and maneuverability to catch their preferred prey of small passerines. See the elevated talon on the inside toe? It's quite similar in anatomy to what dromaeosaurs like Velociraptor and Deinonychus had, and they use it to pin their prey while the hooked beak eats them alive. A gruesome, but very effective hunting technique, and it proves that if they had relatives the size of big cats or bears, they would be quite scary indeed, feathers or not.

My first wild roadrunners! Of course looking nothing like the Looney Tunes character design (also slower than a coyote), but these large members of the cuckoo family are far more interesting. Their appearance wouldn't make you think 'voracious predator', but they are very much so. Snakes, lizards, small birds, and even rodents are commonly on the menu for these guys. In fact, the males will often display with a food offering to females for a chance to breed. A super unique bird that's quite different from how you learn about it in cartoons.

Back from a trip to Arizona, a part of the country I haven't explored that much and complete with new wildlife sightings! The highlight of my stint is quite easy though. The only native ungulate species in the Lower 48 I had never seen in the wild was the collared peccary. While many might just dismiss it as a small pig, they're quite unique, being a separate family that diverged around 30 million years ago. While not as large and aggressive as the white-lipped peccary found further South, they can still be quite defensive when startled, making a clacking noise as an alarm call that simultaneously sharpens their tusks. Luckily, I didn't stress out this lone boy while out on an evening stroll; he just calmly walked around.
