“Animation Mavericks marks my return to making films about cinema history for the first time in over a decade,” said director Kevin Schreck. “The themes and issues that our historical characters encountered and overcame are still relevant today.”

The first trailer has arrived for Animation Mavericks: The Forgotten Story of UPA, director Kevin Schreck’s feature-length hybrid animated documentary about the origins, rise, fall and legacy of UPA, the innovative and iconoclastic studio behind classics like Mr. Magoo series and Gerald McBoing-Boing.

Through interviews with film historians and animated re-enactments of key moments in Hollywood history, the film explores American labor rights, radical art movements and political witch hunts, while telling the story of the studio and the real-life personalities behind it. Inanimate LLC and Kevin Schreck Productions present the documentary, which is scheduled to hit the festival circuit in 2027.

The team first shared the project with AWN back in January. It is produced in cooperation with the Bosustow Estate; producer Sylvie BosRau is the granddaughter of UPA co-founder Steve Bosustow.

Hey everyone! Figured I’d give a small update on the @animationmavericks project I’ve been directing the animation segments on, and my feelings on it. All very good stuff! But still… Feelings.

He’s made four feature length documentaries, most of them award winning, I ask @kevinschreckproductions what brought him to make a film about these people?
