Just shy of twenty-one years ago I started teaching guitar. The longest stretch of that time has been spent teaching at a small music school where, after more than a decade, I taught my final guitar lesson tonight.

While it will take ages to fully process and reflect on how much that time has meant to me, my immediate feelings are simply those of immense gratitude. Some of the students I said goodbye to today are my favorite students I’ve ever worked with—and have become some of my favorite people I’ve ever known.

As a teacher, it is an indescribable kind of joy getting to see the spark of a love for music show up again and again in the faces of students. It’s also marvelous how that spark manifests differently in that none of my students play or sound like me when they pick up a guitar. They all simply sound like themselves. That makes me happy.

Of course I’ll still continue to teach guitar in some form (more on that in another post soon) but for now I’m excited to focus more energy back into making music for awhile, wherever that path may lead…

PS - Thank you to those of you (tagged here) who I‘ve had the privilege of working with/near at some point within the last ten years. Especially @_dasnack_ and @mannygomez226 whose lesson rooms bordered mine. Sorry about the volume…
