POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

On Tuesday, we hosted the first session of our Hild Bede Spotlight On series.

A huge thank you to Dr Anna Adima for her fascinating talk, The Stories History Leaves Out: Creative Writing and Africa‘s Past. From Dr Adima‘s excellent demonstrations of the role creative writing by African women can play in diversifying our understandings of history to thought provoking questions and discussions from the audience, it was a brilliant start to the series.

Thank you as well to everyone who came along! We look forward to welcoming people to our second Spotlight event next Tuesday.

The cover of the 14th issue of The Weganda Review, with a compelling and eclectic mix of writings on or about Tooro, beauty and instability in the work of the Ethiopian artist Natnael Ashebir, voodoo politics in Benin, khat consumption in the Horn of Africa, and more. Art portfolios are by the master printmaker John Bosco Kanuge, a teacher for many years at Makerere University, and the Kenyan conceptual artist Gor Soudan. Cover art is an exquisite print executed by Kanuge many years ago.

@anna.adima spent a day with us at the studio. She interviewed me for over an hour. She had lunch with my team. She sat in the jury of our tote bag design competition. Her story is naturally the most personal and most accurate that has been written about @buzigahill.official and it gives me joy to know that a Ugandan wrote this. 🤎

Thank you @anna.adima @oh_henry @lost.art.media @ealyprayz

This Ugandan fashion label made it to the Barbican. And that’s the least impressive thing they’ve done. 🇺🇬

This week’s feature is a beautiful, heartening story of community-building in another part of the world, as well as an insight into how luxury is being built in Africa - and how that’s being received here.

After our August break from publishing, we’re thrilled to be back with this brilliant feature about @buzigahill.official penned by @anna.adima💥

Rwenzori Marathon,

Whenever I run a marathon trail for the first time, I never really have any targets for my run. I’m always there to do a reconnaissance - admire the place and take photos 😂😂.

That was, of course, the same mindset I had coming here, esp since I knew we were running next to the mountain ranges.

We started off before dusk, some time around 6:45am, and by the time we were 4km in, the sun began rising behind us, and oh my God! What a beautiful sight that was! (Hate the fact that I had to turn back to see it 😂😂😂. Ingekuwa mbele nikimbie nikiiangalia).

The first half of the run was uphill, and oh man! I was dying, save for the beautiful mountainous view! 😂😂.

We ran through a couple of villages, where most of the people came out to the road to see us, and I took this chance to act like a celebrity and greet everyone 😂😂. I would stretch my hands out to greet the kids, and since now they expected this, everyone running behind me had to do the same 😂😂.

The hydration points had water, soda and sugarcane (yeah I’m proud to say that I ate a sugarcane while running a marathon 😂😂), and I realized that I’ve never known how to pace myself when it comes to re-hydrating, because I drank so much at every stop, that by the 16th km, I could feel all the water and soda bouncing in my stomach 😂😂. I decided not to drink anything afterwards, and so, I’d only take the soda bottles to give to the kids waiting upfront. I regretted all this, because once I crossed the finish line, there was nothing to drink 😭😭😭, so I thought about all the soda and water I left behind, and wished I pocketed it all 😔.

It was so lovely to meet fellow Kenyans, whom I could only recognize by the flags they wore as bandanas, or socks with the Kenyan flags, or T-shirts from Kenyan running clubs. Since I was way ahead of most of them, I enjoyed lying to them that they’re close to the half-way point 😂😂. You should’ve seen the looks on their faces! 😂😂. Anyway, I soon realized how effective ‘Wantam!’ is as a clarion call to each other, because it was enough motivation, and you could see someone smile upon hearing and saying it back 😂.

Lovely marathon!

An opening conversation on craft and the journey of a writing life with our keynote guest @chikaunigweauthor and @anna.adima. Shifting from the tradition of speeches, this keynote is structured as a dialogue, allowing the conversation to move where the two speakers take it.

It is the perfect start to the festival's literary programming, built, among others, around Chika Unigwe’s story of what it means to sustain a writing practice over time.

Don't miss this session because it marks the start of the amazing three day festival.

On Tuesday 4th August, 32° East held the Ecotonal Readings Convening: Library, Landscape, and Sustainable Futures supported by Guest Artists Space (G.A.S.) Foundation @gasfoundation and Yinka Shonibare Foundation @yinkashonibarefoundation

Dr. Anna Adima led a presentation on the history of sustainable art practices in the region highlighting how local cultures of making were passed on through apprenticeships and how this reframes notions of sustainability.

Artist and printmaker Kajebe Jacob Joshua then led a practical workshop on sustainable print making practices focusing on clay, barkcloth and Compresssed Earth Bricks as both printing mediums and surfaces.

Ecotonal Readings drew from ‘ecotones’, a term that describes a transitional zone between distinct ecosystems, positing the 32° East library and climate conscious building as active ‘edges’ or ecological thresholds where knowledge, materials, and communities intersect and human, architectural, and environmental archives interact.

The event was part of The AAL Lab Convenings which brings together a network of libraries, publishers, archives, and wider audiences. The series of convenings forms part of Re:assemblages, a programme hosted by @gasfoundation and @yinkashonibarefoundation and curated by Naima Hassan.

The AAL convening series is made possible through the generous support of the Terra Foundation for American Art

On Saturday 1st August, we opened the first constellation of ANE 2026: Healing, and we are still carrying the warmth, conversations, connections, and energy of that afternoon with us.

To everyone who came, listened, asked questions, shared reflections, connected, and simply spent time with us, thank you. Your presence made the opening what it was.

A special thank you to the @urgentactionfund, the Njabala team, our volunteers, service providers, partners, friends, and everyone who worked behind the scenes to bring this exhibition to life. So much care went into creating this moment, and we are deeply grateful.

As we celebrate five years of Njabala, we are reminded that the work of creating safe spaces is itself a practice of care. And perhaps, like healing, it is something we return to again and again together.

Constellation One is open at Njabala Foundation until 29th August.
Constellation Two opens on 5th September and you are all invited.

Come spend some time with the works, and get yourself a copy of the catalog

We look forward to welcoming you. 🤍
