@anna.karima take-over

AK Wane is an artist, writer and curator from Dakar, Senegal.

The year at Jan van Eyck was spent working on a book, a rememory that belongs to somebody else. An exploration of archives, family histories, motherhood and colonialism. AK has gone to France, Senegal and Guinea, in a search through archives and hoping the places themselves will speak to them.

These images were collected throughout the year.
1. Washing a screen
2. Archive in the Jan van Eyck library
3. Door in Foix, Ariège
4. Archives Nationales de La Guinée à Conakry
5. Tests

This week 👉 Join @alexandriadouziech and @anna.karima in conversation at this week’s participant presentation.

The two will discuss their individual projects, exploring shared questions about ancestors, labour, vulnerability, and the experience of working with, within, and outside institutions and archives.

⏰ 17:30 CEST
📅 Wednesday, 23 September 2026
📍 Jan van Eyck Academie

➡ @alexandriadouziech engages the senses to make history felt in the body, positioning plants and their commodities as storytellers and living archives of human resilience. Drawing from her ancestors and family experiences, she will share new and ongoing projects that trace stories of survival while revealing the colonial residues that continue to shape the present.

➡ @anna.karima will present an ongoing research project exploring family history, acts of remembering, and the archive as a site of both presence and absence. Drawing on national, municipal, and colonial records in search of traces of their great-grandmother, AK’s work asks what parts of a life are seen as worth recording and what is lost to time.

Together, they will explore where their practices intersect — in the labor of looking, the ethics of representation, and the vulnerability required to work honestly with inherited histories.

Bioart Society and @food_art_research_network are thrilled to end this month by announcing the contributors, partners and programme for Follow the Plants Research Assembly, 26 – 29 August 2026, Helsinki (and on the airwaves)!

As the perfect accompaniment to the Follow the Plants publication, the assembly seeds correspondences between plants, people and places in the book and those situated in Helsinki. Joining us are artists, writers and activists who have been following plants through/with plantations, labs, kitchens, wildfires, hedgerows, dreams, reindeer, love and ancestors, and who, in different ways, position and perform their research as a lively and living practice

AK Wane has taken on a 2026 residency period at the #janvaneyckacademie, supported by the @saastamoinenfoundation 👏

They work primarily in video, in between experimental and documentary practices, to give voice to historically underrepresented people. They work within and without the archive, searching for meaning in what has been told and what has not.

Wane’s ongoing work "a rememory that belongs to somebody else" is a research into family and colonial histories, and the creation of one’s own archive, a project that they will be further expanding during the JvE residency.

Welcome @anna.karima

Our exhibition ’Still I Rise’ has soon passed its halfway mark and I’ve invited the artist, writer and curator @anna.karima who’s work exists at the intersection of documentary and experimental practices, to interact with our works and activate the exhibition with a workshop.

Join us in a mapping workshop about the ways we orient ourselves in relation to nature. The workshop takes place in the exhibition space Vintti, as a side event of the exhibition Still I Rise.

Did you collect sticks as a kid? Did your grandfather teach you to fish? Do you have a particular technique to climb trees?
Come share stories of nature, trees and traditions with us!

Welcome this Saturday @seinajoentaidehalli from 12 o’clock.

Short film work 🎥

I had the greatest pleasure to work with @sashahuber on this beautiful film. Such an wonderful experience of a community spanning over generations. Keep your eyeballs peeled since it will be screening in a gallery near you!

Synopsis: Rosa Emilia Clay was a teacher (in Tampere, Kuopio, and Urjala), a singer, and a choral conductor born in 1875 in Omaruru, Namibia. She was the daughter of Feroza Sabina Hazara from the Bantu tribe and British merchant Charles William Clay. She was soon taken from her mother by her father and, at the age of four, adopted by Finnish missionaries.

In 1899, Rosa became the first African-born person to be granted Finnish citizenship. Facing racism, differential treatment, and great personal loss, she left Finland for the United States in 1904.

On Rosa’s 150th birthday, 31 August 2025, we – some of her sisters from the future – gathered to honor and celebrate her life as the community she never had during her time in Finland.
