The Foreign Within Artist Statement - Kelsey Ashe Snakes and Ladders (Turned to Stone) depicts “The Adoratrice,” a character drawn from my 2024 novella The Deep Green Sea, a term with ancient roots: it once described women devoted to prayer and mystical service. This image is modelled after The Penitent Saint Mary Magdalen, attributed to Florentine artist Giovanni Francesco Rustici. The Magdalene embodies penitence, redemption, and devotion through renunciation and ascetic withdrawal. She represented the ideal of inner transformation through suffering. In my print, she is not placed within a church or museum but lowered to the ocean floor. Surrounded by seaweed and coral, her broken body appears abandoned, her compassion forgotten, sunk into the abyss. This submersion reflects our own times, when tenderness, care for Earth and other humans and reverence for the sacred feminine are often silenced or discarded. Yet the sea does not erase her. She remains there, upright, still, solid, and awaiting re-discovery. The sea will transform and beautify her, light will continue to filter down through the water to illuminate her face, which offers compassion even in darkness. She will hold the silenced voices drowned by the currents of modernity and offer a ray of hope. Dr. Kelsey Ashe, ‘Snakes and Ladders (Turned to Stone)’, 2024. The Foreign Within Artist Statement - Jacky Cheng A stitched vignette. Developed during an art residency in Finland, this work unfolds as a contemplative record of time, place, and daily ritual. Each day became an act of quiet attention: a line drawn, a thread stitched, a fragment gathered from the passing hours. Time and Place – Rituals traces these accumulations of presence. Each mark and thread maps the quiet negotiations between body and landscape—gesture and climate, repetition and stillness, memory and immediacy. The paper carries the weight of breath, silence, and shifting light across forest and snow. Thread holds what cannot be spoken—moments of anchoring, of release. Not a record of place alone, but of how a body situates itself within it—ritual becomes a way of knowing, stitching a way of holding, and paper a vessel for what time leaves behind. Jacky Cheng, Time and Place - Rituals, 2017. Sumi inks, kozo paper scroll, cotton thread, natural fibre. Video by the artist. …….. The Foreign Within Artist Statement - Erin Coates This work was commissioned as a set of film props by a director in Florida, Christa Boarini. We know each other from the festival circuit and really love each other’s watery, experimental short horror films, so she asked if I could make something special for her new film. The brief was to put vertebral columns into oyster shells – they are bivalve invertebrate molluscs, and most definitely do not normally have spines. I am really into taxonomy, changing ecology, and ideas around transhuman futures in a world of rising oceans, so it felt like a continuation of my interests. I saw this work as an inversion of a series of small silicone and pearl sculptures I did a few years ago, which referenced our evolutionary origins in the ocean and speculated on a possible future – one in which humans have depleted oysters from the sea and grow pearls from our own bodies. Equally monstrous, human DNA now finds its way into oystershells in Lateral Evolution. Erin Coates, Lateral Evolution #1, #2 and #3, 2025. Oystershell, airdry clay, pigment, wire, silicone. The Foreign Within Artist Statement - Eva Fernández In Unos Cuantos Piquetitos (A Few Small Nips), I work with found black-and-white photographs of anonymous Spanish women, intimate postcard-sized relics severed from their family archives. Once treasured heirlooms, these images—now displaced and disconnected—evoke questions about the women’s fates and the erasure of their identities. Were they casualties of war or silenced by history’s amnesia? Over these fragile images, I embroider improvised red-silk costumes inspired by Coros y Danzas folklore—costumes themselves once appropriated by Francoist propaganda. My loose, fractured stitching echoes the rupture of the Spanish Civil War, when women’s newly won suffrage was eclipsed by authoritarianism. The piercing of silk thread becomes both wound and embellishment: a metaphor for bloodshed, survival, and the masking of violence beneath tradition’s veneer. Sewing—long a gendered domestic task—becomes here an act of feminist resistance. By repurposing the very medium historically used to discipline women’s roles, I subvert its legacy to critique the construction of womanhood and the manipulation of cultural identity. The Foreign Within Artist Statement - Susan Flavell Flags are never lavender; they need to be bold primary colours and simple shapes otherwise how do you recognise a friend or foe? This work is one of a series of flags I am making in response to my overwhelming feelings about our current world. This one focuses on my mother’s passing, and our impact on the earth. This flag references the Australian flag, nationalism, the environment; a field filled with hand sewn details that needs to be read up close. Susan Flavell, My Mother’s Burial, 2025. The Foreign Within Artist Statement - Dianne Jones The black body is often invoked as a dark presence, a spectre for white history creating fragmentation and unease in their present. But what are the images that haunt and ‘unsettle’ Indigenous peoples? When I see the portraits of people from the colonial period in Australia, I wonder how much they knew of the violence and dispossession happening at this time. Can the dispossessed rise up through the lens and possess those who haunted them? Deleuze describes affect as autonomic – trigger-like – physical reactions that are above else bodily. There is an instant trigger to images here in which I examine the responses to pictorial reminiscences, romanticism and memory as a ghostly presence imbued with the uncanny. Sites/sights of imperialistic fabrication - the mind remembers something about the image which may or may not be reality but the ‘affect’ of which resonates beyond the aesthetic into an energetic corporeal sensation. Who were these people? What stories lie buried? Inserting myself across genders, there is a repossession and queering of the colonial gothic archive. Through a recovered antique family album from which these works are made, ideologies invested in the construction of iconic historical imagery may be resurrected and embodied/disembodied. The Foreign Within Artist Statement - Stirling Kain ‘Just as the arm is joined to the hand and the hand to the fingers, so also there is no doubt that understanding proceeds from the soul (I) and (II)’ build on Kain’s contemplative research of texts by monastic mystic, Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179). Kain moves between iterative research of Bingen’s texts, and excursions of photography: these reflections, and her photographs, are superimposed upon each other until they are densely matted and inextricable. Kain’s interest in Bingen is her vibrant epiphanies, modest character, and remarkable life. Bingen describes artistically compelling quasi-mythological creation narratives and visual ecstasies. For Kain, the camera inexplicably becomes an optical summoning device of Hildegard, and the darkroom a place of workshop and transformation. The Foreign Within Artist Statement - Martina Mrongovius The images and experiences that I create bring awareness to embodiment, multidimensionality, resonance and emergence. These artworks employ a hybrid of digital and analogue processes and often involve animation, layering and mapping – taking apart time and space to then re-assembled as expressive forms and structural narratives. The ‘we’re all looking’ series of holograms explore collective experience assembled through multiple perspectives. For the holograms 26 people captured photographs in choreographed formations around Melbourne, responding to urban patterns and architecture. By aligning the images to the action of photographing, the figures blend together becoming a visual anchor to the holographic space and protagonist for its unfolding. In Figure 8 on Drummond Street the virtual motion of looking inverts as you play the hologram by moving side to side. In the centre, a sensation almost like weightless occurs before your movement reattached to the zooming perspective. ‘we’re all looking’ was created at the rise of social media, with a call out to participate through Facebook questioning what It mean to see through each other’s experiences. Considering this work in the context of 2025 the awareness of how collective experience can be shaped has become more critical. The Foreign Within Artist Statement - Anna Nazzari As a child growing up in Kalgoorlie, my grandmother was a sort of mysterious, magical figure. She always seemed optimistic even though her life posed challenges, both in terms of the harsh outback environment she lived in and the limited opportunities she received. She had a complicated European heritage, cloaked in family secrets and intrigue. In her later years, she started painting brightly coloured landscapes that reflected the lost Europe she yearned for. Although she spent 80+ years in Ora Banda and Kalgoorlie, this environment never appeared in her paintings. Ironically, when I reflect on my childhood and how “out of place” Gran seemed at the time, her presence seems inseparable from the red dirt, the eucalypts and the forever blue sky. Taken at Lake Douglas in Kalgoorlie The Awakening is an uncanny scape that pays tribute to the strangeness she may have experienced, but also simultaneously acknowledges her ethereal presence forever colours this landscape for me.
