Things your model couldn’t care less about, but photographers geek out over. 😂

The sun is obviously doing the heavy lifting here. The trick is not using it as the key.

I used the sun as the rim, then found where that sunlight was bouncing. In this case, a giant neutral concrete pillar became a huge natural softbox and gave me the key.

Sun for the backlight. Bounce for the key.

Once you start looking at a location from your subject’s point of view, you start seeing light everywhere.

Save this one for the next time you’re shooting on location and don’t have a light with you.

M artisans and imaging’s
available light Black and White collection reel.

All images are friends and acquaintances that were photographed on location within the setting using only the available light. Other than a silver reflector or white translucent on occasion no other equipment was used with little to no retouch.

The journey continues. As I step into a new stage of photographic endeavors, I find myself looking towards new possibilities with older technologies. Taking the path less traveled.
I’m looking forward to showing this to you hopefully in a gallery sometime soon.
