New here? This is Kirsty. She’s 12 years old, and has been living with Terry – her benign, inoperable brain tumour – for more than two years. For most of that time she’s been on chemotherapy, with more treatment likely. Oh, and she’s also raised over £250,000 for children’s cancer charities.
This girl is a wonder:a crochet-loving chatterbox, a ballet-dancing dervish. Terry is a blight on our lives, as brain tumours are to every family. Kirsty has been through the best treatments available and knows to her cost how horrible (and ineffective) they actually are. She is NOT HAPPY about this!
Her new mission: to find 500 Kirsty Queens. A union of 500 people willing to support her by donating any amount a month - a fiver? £10? whatever you can afford - with 100% going to new research into child brain tumours through @oscarscharity . That’s 500 people who see this girl, see the outrage that brain tumours kill more under 40 than any other cancer, and realise, “Hey, I can help.” That’s 500 women and men who’ll join Kirsty’s Queens to hear about her and discover exactly what their money makes possible.

Kirsty was playing badminton the evening before she was diagnosed, even though she could barely see the shuttle. Sport is a lifeline, thrown in her case by @boombadminton

How do you crochet when you can barely see the yarn? We still don’t know, but Kirsty did - and picked up her hooks hours after coming round from her op. The craft community (and @tomdaley !) helped her through the months to come. Two years on and she’s more productive than ever.

80% of the Waugh family (no photo clearance received for the eldest!). Our strategy: deny Terry the attention he craves. Book/cancel/plan/enjoy.

Loving sisters make this whole thing bearable.

@royalmarsdennhs - a cancer hospital as familiar as her own school. That’s just not right.

We’re very grateful to The Guardian and Esther Addley for telling Kirsty’s tale, and to @annaggordon for the gorgeous portraits. Come to think of it there are others we should thank, and they’re anything but countless: 10,417 Kirstys and 1,499 Friends, to be precise at the time of writing. I may not be able to fully express how incredible @raf.uddin and my wedding day was for us both, but these photos sure come close!!

Suffice to say, it was a perfect day ❤️ we cried, danced, laughed, celebrated and had the time of our lives.

So many people helped us along the way and on the day, contributing their time and skills. My dress of course, but also Rafe’s ring, the flowers, the music, speeches, readings, and the photography. Writing lovely notes and making memories with us.

Back Story 💌 Behind the scenes of how Julia and I created her bridal gown. From the moment @onestitchdown asked me to make her gown and veil, a vision instantly came to mind. Over the next few weeks, we set about bringing our ideas to life into a creation that flows! through toiles, fabrics and fittings. It is a challenging and rewarding process refining details until the work speaks for itself 🪡

A few takeaways from the climbing psychology workshop I hosted this weekend:

What we covered:
• Fear as a survival tool
• What triggers your fear — and how it holds you back
• Building a coping routine that actually works for you

Key reflections:
• Fear isn’t the enemy — until it hijacks your focus
• You are not your thoughts
• Climbing is too cool to miss while stuck in your head
• It all comes down to this mindset triad:
→ Be open (to your internal experience)
→ Be present (in your environment)
→ Do what matters
