"On cold mornings, that first white cloud of escaping breath is proof that we are living. Proof of our bodies’ warmth. Cold air rushes into dark lungs, soaks up the heat of our body and is exhaled as perceptible form, white flecked with grey. Our lives’ miraculous diffusion, out into the empty air.”

- The White Book
Han Kang, Deborah Smith (trans.)

I've been thinking about white lately.

The color, the images, the things I cannot see.
The things I cannot unsee.
White ravishing white.

Apparently, white is most well known as a marker of purity. A spotless robe. A color associated with calmness and peace.

White is also the color of ghosts. The spirits of the dead caught in a perpetual haunting in their white garments.

A blank slate, a white space. A clean space. An empty space.

It’s intriguing how a color that seems so simple can stir such deep thoughts and emotions.

I want to let myself be coloured by white,
Beseech it to wash me over.
Leave me clean and pristine.
I wish for white to wash me away.
Leave no dirt to be seen.
Leave not a trace behind.
Leave nothing to be found but white ravishing white.

Let me embrace you, white.
White, let me be embraced by you.

Today (I believe it's still 10th October in some parts of the world) as the honour of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature is bestowed upon Han Kang, I am overcome by an elation that is White.

I've always maintained how deeply I revere Kang's words. The White Book is a beautifully meditative work on loss, grief, birth and mourning coloured in white. Contemplative and sombre, the book blends the personal with the historical, the prose with poetic sentiments. It is this juxtaposition of dualities that the color white represents which is crafted into the book's reflections.

I (somewhat seepishly) thank everyone who listened to me ramble about her in the past years without judgement. I appreciate the readers who took my ramblings seriously and invited her words to seep deep into their skins as well as others who'd already read her & became part of this shared space.

Here's to Kang's distinctive literary voice that "bleeds into" our ears and to the translators who help her words reach a wider audience.

SATOSHI KON, MY LOVE! ❤️
.
#matchdirectorstack
Matching books with my favourite director!
.
The other day I saw "Paprika" on Netflix and that made me very happy because SATOSHI KON is, without a doubt, one of my favourites (anime) directors and artists! I have watched and re-watched all of his stuff and will do it again....
.
When preparing for this post, I took in consideration books I read and the ones I haven't yet (Esther Yi and Yu Miri). Also, I felt recommending Yoshikazu Takeuchi’s novels based on which both "Perfect Blue" and "Paprika" were made was a bit too obvious, as well as recommending Satoshi Kon's manga and short stories. Plus, I don't own his manga. But one day...🤞
.
Anyhow, thank you @what.zana.does for tagging me and @acreedoutworn for coming up with this challange. Go check their posts as well, 'cause directors of their choice are *chef's kiss*! 👌😘
.
I've also tagged some people I would love to see do this post (that I haven't seen tagged before), but everyone's welcomed to join!
.
.
Ps. FROM 1 TO 5 TELL ME HOW MUCH YOU LOVE SATOSHI KON? 😉

ad - pr product | Am I a fan?

I am all for funny women. I’m very happy to get on board with flawed characters. I can cope with chaotic timelines. I’ll work my way through a drawn out will-they-won’t-they. But what I really struggle with is prolonged pining over problematic men - come on, girl, we’re rooting for you to do better!

If you read the above paragraph and thought, “I relate,” then I’ll save you some time and suggest this book might not be for you. That’s not to say this isn’t a great book as with the witty chapter titles, cutting influencer culture observations, and moments of clarity from our unnamed protagonist, it’s not hard to see why this book has been so popular. Like everyone else, I’d seen the gorgeous hardback of this book doing the rounds over the last few months, so when @tandemcollectiveuk and @grantabooks offered a paperback read along, I obviously jumped at the opportunity. You can see from the fun merch they also kindly sent that there are plenty of quotable lines making up Sheena’s easy-reading style throughout the book.

I think I just found myself screaming at our main gal one too many times to move on from the guy she wants to be with and start living her life for her own wellbeing and flourishing. It probably didn’t help that I read this around the time of International Women’s Day so my tolerance for self-absorbed, arrogant, uncommunicative, entitled, toxic, emotionally exploitative men was L O W.

Part of the point of this book seems to be to confront us with unlikeable characters and expose one-sided relationships where you’re more of a fan (or social media stalker) than a real partner. In this sense, Sheena hugely succeeded. And overall, honestly, I did enjoy her writing and hot takes, so I look forward to reading what’s next from her! Just as long as we finally get to see our main gal thriving OR the only returning character is Mocha the dog 🐶

👁️ I’m A Fan - Sheena Patel 👁️

👁️ Synopsis - “The unnamed narrator of I’m a Fan is in a seemingly unequal relationship with ‘The Man I want to be with’. She is also addicted to cyber-stalking the man’s other lover, an online influencer she refers to as ‘The Woman I am obsessed with’.”

👁️ Review - I’ll be honest, I actually really struggled with this book. The first part is really intriguing, as it went on I’ve found it really quite difficult to read. I think that the characters are so unlikeable that it makes it difficult to want to read about them. HOWEVER - saying that I found the book and the characters difficult to read I did really enjoy quite how TOXIC the characters were (I realise I’m contradicting myself but sometimes I find it difficult to articulate my thoughts). I think that the characters being so different to anyone that I’ve ever met made me want to know exactly what their thought processes are and how they make decisions and WHY they make the decisions that they make.

I also understand how relatable the narrator is to an extent. The freedom to be able to use social media to look at whoever’s lives we want to and find out whatever we need to. It brings to light how scary social media is and how easily it can go tits up.

I wouldn’t say I loved this book but I can definitely appreciate how complex and intellectually brilliant it is.

Thank you again to @tandemcollectiveuk @grantabooks @roughtradebooks for allowing be to be a part of this readalong! I had a really good time! 🎉⭐️

Hey there, people. Hope y'all had a Merry Christmas and if not, it's okay. Christmas or any other occasion for that matter, is just another ordinary day of the year for most folks. We're in this together, trust me. I know I haven't really posted anything this month (that's because I've barely had time to read anything lol blame coursework) but I'm back with a good old #bookchallenge before the year ends. I've been reading a little at a time so maybe I'll post something that isn't another challenge next year. Whoa, January is just a few days away, eh? Hopefully, I'll be more active in posting but even if not then it's okay, because I'm still active in my stories & my dms are always open for bookish discussions.

I don't drink coffee and I'm more of a tea person but that's no reason to not participate in the #coffeebooktag that @angmakata.reads had tagged me in. Consider this cup of tea as coffee instead.

P.S. I'm also choosing books I read or came across in 2022 for this challenge (to make it easier for me to pick titles)

🍵Espresso (a book that was hard to get through)

Breast Stories by Mahasweta Devi
(I liked the book but was not too fond of the way the sentences were framed in the English translation done by Gayatri C. Spivak and what it indicated. I'll talk about it in length in some other post.)

🍵Cappuccino (a book that everyone has read but me)

Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney
Babel by R.F. Kuang

🍵Latte (a sweet read)

Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto

🍵Mocha (an emotional read)

Autobiography of Death by Kim Hyesoom
tied with
Picking Off New Shoots Will Not Stop the Spring

Macchiato (favourite reads this year)

[Including only fiction, manga and poetry here even though two of my fav reads were non-fiction/theory books]

Suicide by Édouard Levé
Earthlings by Sayaka Murata
The Alphabet in the Park by Adélia Prado
Our Dreams at Dusk by Yuhki Kamatani
Cursed Bunny by Bora Chung
Your Emergency Contact Has Experienced an Emergency by Chen Chen

There you go. Enjoy the rest of the month and for those of you who're stuck in work (aka people like me), well here's virtual hugs for you. Fighting 💪🤗🫂🥲💕

Can you spot the rhyme?
You'll need to know the bookstagrammers names.
Some are easier than others! 😂🙈
How many did you get?

I will add the answers, in a pinned post below. Thanks to my son Sam for his help with some of these :)

Hope this provided you with a bit of a fun at what can be a pretty stressful time of year. Don't worry normal bookish content will henceforth resume :)

Can you believe it's already September, my favourite month when I finally get to swim and go on a vacation, hehe. Can't wait!😀
.
August was beautifully intense in every sense! I loved what I was reading for #exyulit challenge I am co-hosting every August with @a_literary_snob!
My focus was on feminism in Yugoslavia and women authors: classics by Dubravka Ugrešić and Slavenka Drakulić, and books by authors I knew I will love (Lana Bastašić) and some new authors I really enjoyed (Gabriela Babnik, Ivana Đilas).
Thank you everyone for reading with us this month and celebrating literature and nonfiction from the countries of former Yugoslavia! ❤️😘 I would tag all of you, but Instagram doesn't allow it..
.
I also started reading books longlisted for #2022bookerprize
(not super impressed so far!) and this summer participated in a Master class with @ggreenwell, reading post-Stonewall masterpiece of gay fiction - Holleran's "Dancer From The Dance".
.
You can imagine how hard it was to choose #bookofthemonth, so I decided to stick to ex Yu lit, and choose two favourites: #catchtherabbit by #lanabastasic and "Intimately" by #gabrielababnik (review coming up!). Although I liked Bastašić's debut novel more, Babnik's novel impressed me more. I liked how ambitious it was and how cosmopolitan, although it mostly takes place in Slovenia.

📚 Four Books Soon 📚

Happy #feministfriday everyone! 🤗💓

The lovely @booksandhappythoughts tagged me in the #fourbookssoon challenge so I thought I would give it a go. My tbr is out of control so I am trying to buy less books and read more books I already own but easier said than done!

📖 The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyne seems to always receive good reviews and I bought it after @e.j.harper_author gave it a glowing review.

📖 The Fortune Men by Nadifa Mohamed. I bought this one after @this_hybrid_reads recommended it!

📖 The Poppy War by R F Kuang has been sitting in my tbr for far too long. Many fantasy bookstagrammers have highly recommended this one.

📖 Unwell Women by Elinor Cleghorn. I enjoyed invisible women by Caroline Criado Pérez so I am looking forward to this one although I suspect I will end up angry at the way women have been treated!

Have you read any of these? Which one shall I read first?

I have tagged a few of you but no pressure! 🤗
