Many speech-language pathologists reference Brown’s classic language development studies when analyzing language samples.

Brown (1973) found that irregular past tense plurals developed early in the developmental sequence.

However, a study by Shipley et al. (1991) examined 120 children between 3;0 and 9;0 years, and found that some irregular verbs (e.g., hit) were correctly produced by the three-year-olds, but other irregulars (e.g., sent) were still not mastered by age 9.

Based on their findings, they created a preliminary order of development of the irregular past tense verbs (80% mastery level), which is posted in this infographic.
