We don’t arrive in middle age as blank slates. We carry our entire lived experience into the exam room with us—everything written on our charts, and everything buried beneath them. It took me three decades to understand this. How the body never forgets. How you can close the wound and still bleed out.

The conversation around menopause and midlife women’s health is finally shifting. We have more awareness, more research, more funding. More women are coming forward, pouring their stories into the well like offerings. There is healing in the witnessing, in the exchange with ourselves, with others, and with the doctors who care for us.

My body was never the enemy – it did not betray me. Not even when I buried the traumatic memory deep in my cells. It had only done what bodies do. Survived, endured, and asked—sometimes begged—to be listened to.

I’ve been writing this book for the past nine years, since I was diagnosed with breast cancer and pushed into medically induced menopause at 37. What began as a reckoning with my health became a much larger unraveling of the life I thought I knew.

This is the book I needed when I was desperately trying to understand what was happening to my body, my mind, my relationships, and my sense of self. When I was riddled with self-doubt, embarrassment, and shame about the sudden changes I experienced in menopause. It’s about what happens when the structures you’ve built your entire life around begin to fall away—marriage, motherhood, womanhood. Ultimately, it’s about finding your way back to yourself.

The cover is a rendering of a portrait I had done here in Santa Fe with the brilliant @ranieramiel whose work is rooted in reclamation, embodiment, and what it means to be witnessed. Through writing and sharing my story, I hope to offer others that same kind of recognition, the chance to feel seen and held without judgment—to feel a little bit less alone.

Knowing this story will soon exist outside of me, that people I know and people I don’t know will read it, is both terrifying and incredibly meaningful. More than anything, I hope it finds its way to anyone who might need it.

I started writing about my experience with breast cancer and induced menopause during early Covid days. The world was ending, or at least the world we knew, my mother was gone—it seemed like a good time to start.

Thanks to my auntie/therapist/editor extraordinaire @didjewknow_emily, I worked up the courage to send a few essays out into the black hole that is online submissions. With the guidance of @profsue123 and @noahmichelson, I published my first piece on @huffpost about the worst thing that ever happened to me, which brought many silver linings. Women began to contact me, detailing their experience with GSM, inviting me to their support groups, and sending me homemade remedies.

This book is about coming to terms with the hard truth that no one is going to save you. Or fix you. It’s about becoming a health advocate and changing your mindset around risk and quality of life. More than anything, it's about trust and discernment, things I learned from my mother but never really practiced until now.

I'm beyond grateful to have the chance to tell my story and connect with more people. Survivorship isn’t something I will ever take for granted. So many individuals have lost their lives to cancer, some of the brightest, strongest, healthiest people I've known. Be diligent about screening, and KNOW YOUR RISK💓 @saramagss @healinganddealingpod
