On Aug. 15, the Dormition Fast comes to an end as the Orthodox Church commemorates the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, one of the great feasts of the Church.

Dormition means “falling asleep.” The feast commemorates the earthly death of the Mother of God and her passage into eternal life.

At her Dormition, the Theotokos is surrounded by the Apostles, while Christ receives her soul, traditionally depicted as a small child. As she once held Christ in her arms, now Christ receives His mother into His.

The Dormition holds sorrow and hope together. Through the death and Resurrection of Christ, death is no longer the end, but a passage into life.

Join us this weekend:

Saturday, Aug. 15, 6 p.m. — Great Vespers
Sunday, Aug. 16, 11 a.m. — Divine Liturgy

Monastic life is often pictured in prayer, but it is also lived through work. Whether tending a garden, harvesting food or preparing a meal, every task can become an offering to God.

In the Orthodox tradition, prayer and labour go hand in hand, teaching humility, gratitude and faithful service.

“Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.” Colossians 3:23

In the Orthodox Church, women have helped shape the life of the Church through devotion, sacrifice and love for Christ. The Theotokos, the Mother of God, stands as the highest example of obedience. The myrrh-bearing women were the first to witness the Resurrection.

Throughout history, women—saints, martyrs, ascetics, mothers and countless others—have borne witness to Christ in both public and quiet ways.

On March 6 we remember the Finding of the Precious Cross.

St. Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, traveled to Jerusalem in the 4th century to identify the places associated with Christ’s crucifixion. At the time, the holy sites had been obscured and built over.

Through perseverance and faith, the Cross was uncovered. What had been hidden was revealed.

The Cross is not defeat.
It is victory through sacrifice.
It is love extended to the end.

In Lent, we look again to the Cross and remember what it cost.

"... it is only when we have been taught by suffering, that we who love non-being regain the capacity to love what is."
St.Maximos the Confessor

What it is, "The Cross, The Tomb, The Resurrection on the Third day, The Ascension into heaven, the enthronement at the right hand, and the second and glorious coming again.”
