Anne Marie Basquin
Eucalyptus Tessellation

Made through unstable cyanotype processes, Eucalyptus Tessellation uses gathered eucalyptus branches from Te Hāwere-a-Maki Goat Island to form a repeated photographic pattern. Through layering, repetition, and sunlight exposure, Anne transforms plant matter into a shifting visual record of place — tracing the density, rhythm, and presence of these introduced species within the landscape.

Anne Marie Basquin
Tessellations

Anne’s practice explores walking, listening, and working collaboratively with landscape through unstable cyanotype processes. In Tessellations, plant specimens gathered from Te Hāwere-a-Maki Goat Island are used to create repeating cyanotype forms that trace the character and ecology of place. Working with invasive and “naturalised” species, these works become quiet portraits of landscape, movement, and time.

Member spotlight ✨Anne Marie Basquin✨ 11 artists from the @art.photo.school inaugural 2025 classes have put together a group show called RANGE as part of the Auckland Festival of Photography. @range.nz.

Anne Marie Basquin is an artist and writer based in Leigh near Te Hāwere-a-Maki Goat Island Marine Reserve in Aotearoa New Zealand. She grew up in the Midwest and Great Lakes regions of the USA and south of Ōtepoti Dunedin on the South Island of Aotearoa between the Taieri and Akatore rivers. Her latest work has embraced walking long looping routes, listening to and working collaboratively with the landscape, and producing unstable cyanotype exposures, as a salve for dislocation and its impacts on the body.

/

In Tessellations, dynamic cyanotypes, exposed using invasive plant specimens collected from the Te Hāwere-a-Maki Goat Island area in the spring and summer of 2025/2026, are presented in tessellated form. Exposures made using a twelve-inch section of banana passionfruit vine or two small branches of eucalyptus now convey the original sites, the family of strangling vines and the crowd of towering eucalyptus that characterise the ‘waste areas’ of vegetation lining either side of the steep winding road leading down into the valley. A single blade of seeded prairie grass evokes the open pasture above Cape Rodney’s cliffs and a lone frond of bracken conjures the fernbrake where pasture meets the tamped-down coastal walkway.

These exposures and tessellations are sideways captures of the unseen and ethereal essence of these sites and geopolitical snapshots of this particular place at this particular time. Made using ‘naturalised’ species native to Australia, South America, and China, with the artist from North America, also ‘naturalised’, working in collaboration with the plants themselves to produce a portrait of this place where we each live now.

APS x RANGE

RANGE exhibition presents a group of eleven artists situated around Aotearoa and the UK drawn together by a shared interest in analogue photographic processes. They met in the first iteration of Art Photo School in 2025 facilitated by @katevanderdrift
Exhibition text in slides by Anne Basquin @annemariebasquin

The next cohort of APS is set to start in July as a membership. The idea of the APS group work membership is that it is designed to help artists grow their creative practice using analogue, cameraless, and expanded photographic techniques.

It’s a live community of like-minded artists working with photography, last year we met weekly and in the new iteration we will be meeting twice monthly for technical tutorials and live group concept development calls.

The plan is that it helps artists move forward with motivation, support and accountability.

Each month centres around a new theme, process or technique. Members receive a workshop, an optional assignment, a tailored task for their practice and opportunities to share work, receive feedback and troubleshoot challenges.

The exhibition RANGE is part of the Auckland Festival of Photography on until the 18th of June @eyesonfire.nz

The exhibiting members of RANGE exhibition met in the first iteration of APS last year.

The title of the first course was The Analogue Photography School: From Concept to Exhibtion.

Fairly ambitious when we look back, I don’t know how I thought the proposed 10 week block could cover that much content but the aim was to get people working with analogue processes and thinking about those techniques meaningfully by talking through the concept development together. Which we did!

We started with a cyanotype workshop, then a plant based developing one. Some members stayed for another 10 week block. I didn’t have any hand in organising this show though. These artists did that together.

I’m excited to restart APS with a new structure soon. Especially after seeing these artists speak in their panel discussion last weekend. The next iteration will begin in July and is open to new members joining us. Get in touch. I’ve made a website but the structure is actually going to be slightly improved from what I’ve proposed there and not multiple time zones. We will just start with one Timezone for the concept development sessions and if it grows we can add more.

It’s going to include a monthly technique workshop, an optional but recommended monthly assignment and a concept development live session each month (plus some other bits and tailored tasks for professional practice). I’ll post when I’ve updated the site.

So excited to be heading up to Tamaki Makaurau @eyesonfire.nz for our group show titled Range opening Friday 29th at 5 30pm.

Some of us are meeting face to face for the first time! Come along to our opening and celebrate with us ✨️ We have an artist talk on Saturday at 11am so that will be a fun, deep dive into process and practices if that's also of interest.

Sharing some words from our press release to pique your curiosity! Credited to writer @annemariebasquin

The artists in RANGE seek a deeper engagement with place and material, realised, over time, by working in collaboration with place and material, by slowing down and listening, by favouring process over production.

For more info check our IG page @range.nz @thebigideanz

Until soon!

I was very pleased to have one of my photographs included in the Women’s Work 2025 exhibition (In)visible, shown in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland from March 7-10 with the tagline: “A photographic exhibition featuring the work of 35 of Aotearoa’s finest female photographers.”

The Women’s Work collective made me feel welcomed and celebrated. I am very much in admiration of their aim to bring artists and photographers, often in competition for scarce market resources, together to showcase their work, creating an environment more collegial than competitive.

I exhibited a photograph of an exposed kelp bed at Te Kohuroa Matheson Bay with the artist statement below:

This photograph was taken opposite the island at Te Kohuroa Matheson Bay, currently the site of community-led conservation run by the Te Kohuroa Rewilding Initiative, working towards kelp reforestation by removing an overabundance of kina.

Working within their female-led team, I can’t help but draw parallels between conservation and caretaking. Much of our labour, underwater or behind the scenes, is invisible, just as a clean home obscures the hours of work that go into keeping it that way. Arrowing down towards the seafloor to gather an armload of kina, I wonder how this work will be quantified at the surface.

This photograph peers through the ocean’s mirrored edge, to frame this ever-changing space at the intersection of observation and ecological dynamism, of women’s work and the caretaking of our ecosystems. This photograph aims to make our labours of caretaking visible.

Thanks to Women's Work @womensworknz for the opportunity to exhibit and to TKRI @tekohuroarewilding for the opportunity to take part in this conservation mahi.

Me volunteering for TKRI as part of their kina removal process on the reef at Te Kohuroa Matheson Bay in early February. Thanks for the screenshot FD! @benthics_below.

I'm getting ready for the exhibition opening of Women's Work 2025 -(In)Visible happening tonight. I'm in my black silk opshop dress and new sneakers, about to go and pick up Larissa who is coming with me. I feel good!

I'm exhibiting a photograph of an exposed kelp bed near the island at Te Kohuroa. I'm exhibiting as an emerging artist along with one other woman. The other 33 female or non-binary photographers are all professional photographers working in the industry (mostly commercial, I think). The tagline for the exhibition is '35 of Aotearoa's top female photographers' so I am feeling incredibly fortunate to be included and just a little bit intimated to rub shoulders with some incredible photographers!!

I'm wondering if there are any other photographer / archive nerds at the event trying to make a record, trying to capture this era of unprecedented change. I seem more interested in that than actually making a living which is probably to my detriment but isn't something I can control (I've tried). I will soak up all the wisdom and business know-how I can tonight from this amazing line up of powerful creative women.
