Bird 433. Red-winged Fairy-wren by @annlef1 ✨ A jewel of northern Australia, the Red-winged Fairy-wren flashes crimson and black as it dances through tropical grasslands. πŸ•ŠοΈ #Macnjenni Bird Gallery – Bird 433. Red-winged Fairy-wren πŸͺΆ Information Scientific name: Malurus elegans Range & habitat: Found in the south-west of Western Australia, inhabiting dense heathlands, shrublands, forest undergrowth, and areas of thick native vegetation. Key features: Breeding males are striking, with deep blue-violet plumage, black facial markings, and rich chestnut-red shoulder patches. Females and non-breeding males are mostly brown with reddish-brown tones around the face and wings. Diet: Feeds mainly on insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates, which it searches for among low vegetation and leaf litter. Nesting: Builds a small domed nest close to the ground within dense shrubs. The female lays 2–4 eggs and undertakes most of the incubation duties. Fun fact: Like many fairy-wrens, these birds live in cooperative family groups, with older offspring often helping parents raise new chicks.

Bird 45 - Western Bower Bird > Credits: @annlef1 > 🌸 A master of design and deception, the Western Bowerbird turns the desert into its gallery of treasures. The Western Bowerbird (Chlamydera guttata) is an extraordinary species native to the arid and semi-arid regions of central and western Australia. Unlike most birds, its beauty lies not only in its plumageβ€”speckled brown with a subtle lilac-pink nape patchβ€”but in its artistry. Males build intricate bowers, decorating them with stones, bones, shells, and even bits of glass, arranging them with astonishing care to impress potential mates. These bowers are not nests but elaborate courtship arenas, where creativity and patience determine success. Macnjenni Bird Gallery✨ Fun Fact: Western Bowerbirds are known to place shiny or colorful objects in their bowers, and some have even been observed rearranging decorations dailyβ€”proof that style matters in the bird world! --- Hashtags Bird-focused (10): #WesternBowerbird #Bowerbird #BirdsofAustralia #AvianArchitecture #BirdCourtship #AustralianBirds #BirdWatching #WildlifePhotography #Ornithology #NatureLovers Macnjenni/gallery traffic (10): #MacnjenniBirdGallery #BirdArtistry #FeatheredTreasures #AvianBeauty #BirdGallery #NatureInFocus #WildlifeInspiration #BirdsofInstagram #WingsOfTheWorld #ColorfulBirds

A sweet noolbenger (Noongar, honey possum) enjoys a sunset drink from a beautiful banksia. Did you know that the noolbenger feeds exclusively on nectar and pollen, and is the only marsupial in the world known to have such a specialised diet? This species is an incredibly important pollinator of banksia flowers, and they have actually developed a symbiotic relationship with these plants. The dependence of honey possums on the banksia flowers means they are able to discriminate ripe, nectar-bearing banksia flowers from immature unripe flowers. This skill enables the species efficiently to collect large quantities of pollen and nectar. πŸ“· This incredible photo was taken by Anne Lefroy (@annlef1), in WA's south-west. #wildlifephotography #honeypossum #noolbenger #banksia #australianflowers #wildlifeofaustralia #australiananimals #southwestWA #discoverWA

It’s Australia’s Pollinator Week! πŸ¦‡ Unfortunately due to deforestation, development, and anthropogenic climate change, important pollinators are at risk of extinction. This not only has an impact on the species themselves but the plant diversity they pollinate, and the species that call those plant environments home (no flying foxes, no eucalypts, no eucalypts, no koalas). πŸ¦‡ 🌳 🐨 When we think of pollination, we often think honeybees 🐝🍯 and whilst they are important, particularly for food crops, honeybees can outcompete native pollinators such as other bees. And when we talk about pollinators, particularly bees in trouble, it is actually the native bee populations around the world that are actually declining, not honeybees (as these populations are sustained via agriculture). It is important to not only highlight but to support our native pollinator diversity, as many plants rely on specific native pollinators, and many native plant-pollinator relationships have evolved together. From moths, beetles, wasps, and even flies… there is no short of pollinators in Australia, but we have compiled some of our favourites, arguably the most important, and some of the most intriguing pollinators in celebration of Australia’s pollinator week πŸ¦‹ Incredible image by @annlef1 of a honey possum / Noolbenger feeding on Banksia coccinea ❀️
