It took a village. Three women built one. 🩷

In 2020 I was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer before I’d had the chance to become a mom. Treatment meant IVF, one embryo, and the news I’d need a surrogate — at a cost of $150,000, with none of the financial support oncology patients deserve.

So two other survivors, Victoria Raphael and Ann Palmer, and I googled how to start a nonprofit, filled the chip dip at our own fundraisers, and bootstrapped A Chance For Life from nothing.

My son, Chance, arrived in December 2023 — months after we awarded our first grant.

This summer, our first grant recipients, Rusty and Christina, welcomed their daughter Stella after a two-year wait for the right surrogate. Every dollar donated helped make that happen.

We were three women who turned pain into purpose. And we won’t rest until every woman gets her Chance.

On being aware🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷

I cried like a baby all day. It’s not like this is my first Breast Cancer Awareness rodeo, but today felt different. I’m usually pulled in a hundred directions with press and events. This year, I chose one thing to attend today. The launch of the the annual #breastcancerawareness campaign for an organization I work closely with, @bcrfcure

It was held at Grand Central Terminal. The whole worst club of best members was there (aka my survivor and thrivers sisters). Some were performing with @oncoballet and @thejanicejam and as they sang and danced to ā€œFor Goodā€. I was surrounded by my Breasties in the audience, many of whom are my inner sanctum friend group, and I started to sob. Deep guttural wails came through me. Not because I was sad about my own breast cancer, but because I felt each of their journeys profoundly as I scanned their beautiful faces. They walked through so much fire and today use their voices, bodies, platforms, energy, focus, time, and heart to help us move closer to a world without breast cancer. Each of them in their own unique way. And I felt so damn lucky to know and love them.

So this month, celebrate the women you know who wake up each morning to be moms, co-workers, friends, sisters, teachers, daughters, wives, and advocates after enduring the unimaginable. Tell their stories. Celebrate them.

It’s my wish for a world without breast cancer and we are moving closer to that every single day with research. That day has not arrived quite yet. A prayer for those we have lost. A thank you to those who have held me up. And a deep bow to those who walk beside me🩷

ā€œBecause I knew you, I have been changed for goodā€šŸ©·

I used to drink wine, now I just BAKE EVERYTHING.

In all seriousness, I celebrated 90 days alcohol free yesterday. The first 90 consecutive days of my adult life I’ve gone without alcohol. I am so darn proud of myself and I keep using the phrase, ā€œmy soul has come back onlineā€.

From a former NYC party girl turned Brooklyn toddler mom, I choose frosted brownies and my baby every single time..
