Will Ausar Thompson have a breakout year and what would that look like to you?

The defense is already there. In 2025-26 he was an All-Defensive First Team wing, a top-3 Defensive Player of the Year finisher, and the league’s steal leader. The open question is whether the offense catches up in year four.

2025-26 regular season (73 GP, 72 starts, 26.0 MPG) 9.9 PPG, 5.7 RPG, 3.1 APG, 2.0 SPG, 0.9 BPG 52.5% FG, 25.0% 3P (6-for-24), 57.1% FT.

2025-26 playoffs (14 GP, all starts, 30.5 MPG) 8.2 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 3.1 APG, 2.0 SPG, 1.8 BPG 50.5% FG, 14.3% 3P, 51.6% FT.

He started almost every game, then held up in a longer postseason run. The counting numbers stayed modest because the shot diet is almost all at the rim, and the free-throw line is still a problem.

Fair 2026-27 projection 13.0 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 3.6 APG, 1.9 SPG, 1.1 BPG in about 30 minutes Roughly 51% FG, low-30s from three on a still-small volume, free throws climbing toward 62%.

That is a real step, not a 20-point leap. A breakout for Ausar looks like more creation in the half court, a usable corner three, and the same havoc on the other end. If the jumper stays a non-factor, he is still an elite defender whose box score undersells him.

Drop a yes or no. Does this become the year the offense matches the defense?
