Cannot fully express how wonderful being in this room was. It was filled with so much talent, kindness, and positive energy, and it was a joy to be surrounded by such incredible people. Everyone brought something unique to the room, and the generosity and support we shared made the entire experience that much more meaningful. I feel so lucky to have been a part of it. #golden #goldenanewmusical

This was the silliest group of magicians I’ve ever had the good fortune to build a musical with.

Massively grateful to @heymadsie and @itspatrickoneill for setting the tone in this wonderful room.

One of the things I have always loved about Encores, is that they are willing to take risks on shows! While dusting off the oldies from yesteryear, they still add in pieces that speak to the not-so-distinct past! The Life and its themes of a pre-Disneyfyed Midtown is a show worth revisiting, memorizing and love with all your heart!

Show: The Life
Songs: “The Oldest Profession” & “Check It Out” & “He’s No Good” & “A Piece of the Action” & “Don’t Take Much” & “My Body”

The Life is a musical with a book by David Newman, Ira Gasman and Cy Coleman, music by Coleman, and lyrics by Gasman. Based on an original idea by Gasman, the show explores the underbelly of Times Square’s 42nd Street, inhabited by pimps and prostitutes, druggies and dealers, and runaways and street people in the era prior to its Disneyfication. Ira Gasman recalls walking on 42nd Street (in New York City) and seeing an arrest: “What theatre, I thought, right there in the street! It got me thinking about this show.”

In March 2022, New York City Center Encores! presented a concert adaptation of the musical, adapted and directed by Billy Porter, in his directorial debut. This production significantly adapted the script and structure, changing the musical into a flashback narrated by an older Jojo, and rearranging several of the numbers, and providing more backstory to several characters. The production starred Alexandra Grey as Queen, Antwayn Hopper as Memphis, Mykal Kilgore as Young JoJo, Ledisi as Sonja, Erika Olson as Mary, Destan Owens as Old JoJo, and Ken Robinson as Fleetwood. The ensemble included Joe Beauregard, Angela Brydon, Adee David, Tyler Eisenreich, Asmeret Ghebremichael, Semhar Ghebremichael, Jeff Gorti, Albert Guerzon, Heather Lang, Nathan Lucrezio, Tiffany Mann, LaQuet Sharnell Pringle, Devin L. Roberts, MiMi Scardulla, Anastasia Talley, and Tanairi Vazquez.

Enjoy!
