Despite never thinking that grapefruit had caffeine, the name “Decaffeinated Grapefruit” prompted me to conduct an internet search, which confirmed my original suspicion. Nevertheless, I wonder whether the name was designed to prompt a sense of uncertainty in the listeners as an indicator of the band’s unpredictable music. If that was the case, I tip my proverbial hat to them.

In all honesty, their only full-length output, “Drift,” is all over the place. I found similarities to Rush, Daughtry, Guns N’ Roses, Shellac, Black Sabbath, Fugazi, and Misfits, as well as elements from songs like “Maggot Brain” by Funkadelic and “Paralyzer” by Finger Eleven. Some of these references are only germane to the underlying work (i.e., the songwriting and lyricism), while others point to performance and recording techniques.

There are nice drone-like bits, Tom Morello scratches, piano work, whispering, and more on this record, which showcases the range of the band. I think there’s potential for bigger and better things in their future if they can articulate a more focused vision. Regardless, if you fancy prog rock or psychedelic grunge, you may find yourself rocking to some tunes here.

*Founding year was inferred from the date of their oldest Facebook photo as well as their oldest release
Note: Since the music on “Drift” is not available for selection, I went with a song from their most recent EP.
