BRICK LAMPS // ANTON HERMES // BA // 2026

@antoinehermes

Using a technique that is traditionally used to make roof tiles and bricks, I designed a lamp family. The project aims to show that design can help revive local production by indentifying production methods that can be reinterpreted in different contexts. The process called clay-pressmolding allows for a high degree of technical detail as well as fast and cheap serial production, which is why it‘s still relevant in the building sector today.

Historically, in the region in and around Berlin and wherever else clay was found, the process has been used for thousands of years and around 1900 almost the entirety of Berlin was built with press-molded clay bricks.
During the project, I was kindly supported by the Märkische Ziegel GmbH, which is a former clayburning plant in Glienick, Brandenburg.

The economic history of the process and how small-scale production of press-molded clay parts could be feasible are also questions that the project touches on. Conclusively, different typologies of objects for future applications of the process are explored.
