Were you at Greenwich and Docklands Festival @gdifestival this year? We were there in book form, as they celebrate their 30th anniversary with a book called Above and Beyond.

One of our early outdoor works commissioned by GDIF called All That Is Solid Melts Into Air (2011) gets a solid mention !

“It was a joyous moment with echoes of an England win or a Jubilee street party.”

Check out the full excerpt in the reel ⬆️ and watch to end for show images.
Massive shout out to all the cast and crew tagged (some proper nostalgia for you at end of reel!)

What a time - 14 years ago - we do love a #TBT

We are delighted to share a film of the performance ‘Stand of the Sun’ by @wearenorthsouth.

👆Watch via the link in our bio (run time: 12 mins)👆

The performance is inspired by our ongoing environmental history research at Melting Metropolis and was directed by our research artist @studiobryonyella.

Stand of the Sun considers the state of our modern-day relationship to the sun from both an embodied and a celestial perspective, travelling from outer space into the urban heat islands of our cities and through our heat-stroked bodies. It was performed as part of @orleanshousegallery’s Cultural Reforesting programme.

With huge thanks to the creative team who brought this story to life:

3 days to go still 'Stand of the Sun' 🔆 so excited to share what we have been working on with
@meltingmetropolis @studiobryonyella

Stand of the Sun invites us to observe our cities through the solar gaze, exploring the deeply uncanny and uncertain nature of our celestial relationship today. It imagines what our closest star would say to humanity if only we could listen. How does the Sun experience our over-heating world? What does it feel like to move through our too-hot cities and heat-stroked bodies? Can we empathise with an entity so utterly different to us, yet intertwined with our fate?

Travelling from outer space into the melting metropolis, stories from the hot heart of our solar system will guide us through the evening.

@meltingmetropolis, @wellcometrust, @livuni and @orleanshousegallery

Director: @studiobryonyella
Performer & Composer: @bumisees
Choreographer: @antoinemarcmove
Lighting: @rachelsampley

I’m starting to dive into reflecting on the creative process of collaborating around the ‘My Body is A Sundial’ sculpture and @meltingmetropolis research for our forthcoming performance: Stand of the Sun…
(Premiering in less than two weeks! Tickets via bio 👆🏽)
Considering the experience of watching music, dance and lighting magicians at work, while beginning to wonder on the possibilities and impossibilities of immersive art...

🦋💜

A little bit of magic was created last week, the first time I’ve worked with digital live tech. My work is so much about tangible, real, sensorial and direct contact with nature. But this was an opportunity to explore alternative potential dimensions to my research, to dip my toe into the digital realm, and I adore the resulting visuals caught by cinematographer Michele Cadei of dancer @chevonedwards_dance in the @milkitstudio.

This was a seed commission project with Digital Black Dance Ecologies, an interdisciplinary network that foregrounds Africanist dance across digital performance art, with a focus on centring the embodied epistemologies of digital Black dance across the intersections of social and environmental injustice. It is led by Dr Tia-Monique Uzor, in collaboration with the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) @rgs_ibg and funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council @weareukri.

The @dbdeproject aims to build knowledge across Black geographies and disciplines. I brought my ongoing project ‘The Colour of Transformation’ to this commission, to explore new ways of storytelling the embodied experience of personal change in relation and response to the natural world and the current nature crisis. I can’t wait to share the result of this short but intensive experiment, which I couldn’t have done without the help of mentor and choreographer @antoinemarcmove, the digital skills (and patience!) of @krtv_visuals and the space/equipment/advice of Milkit studio, the original score by @bumisees @orphyvibes and costume by Ingrid Hu @studio_prelude, and of course Chevon Edward’s beautiful dancing 🦋🙏🏽

Working digitally has been an entirely new and alien experience. More reflections soon, but for now sharing a few sneak peeks and expressing gratitude to the full team who facilitated this experiment - and of course @dbdeproject for conceiving of such a wonderful opportunity for artists like me to navigate creatively through social and environmental injustice.🙏🏽
