In late 2023 and early 2024, I decided to switch my iPhone for a dumbphone.

This experience greatly informed my understanding of the subject of smartphones and their place in today’s world; which in turn was essential to my approach for my subsequent semester and diploma projects at ÉCAL.

And in the spirit of the season, I’m sharing photos/memories of my time using this device (and its 5 megapixel camera).

An extract of spreads from the book, part of the «…Notes and Rooms on Gardening…» project we did in January 2024. This project was carried out under the supervision of Elisa Medde (@elsmdd), Milo Keller and Radim Peško.

«...Notes on Rooms and Gardening...» offers a commentary on the evolution of the representation of objects through different photo and graphic tools, such as drawings using a camera lucida, photograms in the darkroom, classical digital still life in a studio, but also Computer-Generated Images on a computer, and even Artificial Intelligence, thanks to generative systems. The narration of this project articulates between rooms of a house as a metaphor for the evolution of the camera apparatus, evolving thanks to and through technological progress. Starting from the bedroom and ending in the garden, the viewer is invited to explore each room of a house and look at things, objects, graphic exercises, and experiments.

Our warmest thanks go to the industrial designers who kindly agreed to collaborate with us and take part in our photo/graphic research project. Eduardo Altamirano (@enlasuperficie), Youssef Bassil (@juice_bassil), Marco Ciacci (@marco.ciacci), Gabriella Duck Garnham (@gabysees) (@cees______), Justus Hilfenhaus (@justushilfenhaus), Clémentine Merhebi (@clementinemerhebi), Lilian Onstenk (@lilianonstenk), Marco Renna (@marcorenna_), Aramis Rüdisühli (@aramis.xyz), Antonio Severi (@antonio_severi).

Our gratitude also goes to CIME (Interdisciplinary Centre for Electron Mircroscopy) and specially Jérémie Bettex for allowing us to freely use their microscopes in their bulding at EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne).

Special thanks to Antonio Severi (@antonio_severi) for making the camera lucida we used throughout the process.

A final special word of thanks to Shiny Vallenas (@shiny.val), without whose invaluable help this project would never have seen the light of day.
