Ancient Philippi: History is Alive & "at Your Feet"

At a distance of 15 km from Kavala are preserved the ruins of the ancient city of Philippi. It is a historic destination, it all started here. The fate of humanity was written here at least twice. It was founded as a colony by the Thassians, but was adopted by the king of Macedonia Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great. The most of the city is in excellent condition, especially the ancient theater.
The famous Battle of Philippi (42 BC) took place in this city between the murderers of Julius Caesar, Brutus & Crassus & the avengers of Octavian (the later Roman Emperor Augustus) & Antonios. The first 2 lost the battle & committed suicide. It is a well-known phrase "Οψόμεθα εις Φιλίππους" which says: "The time will come to clear our accounts to Philippi." Since then the city became a Roman colony & developed greatly as a transportation crossroads. In 49 AD the Apostle Paul founds the first Christian church in Europe in Philippi & baptizes Lydia. There is the prison where he was imprisoned until today.
There are sections of the market, palaces, walls, etc., with the most important being the ancient theater which operates to this day during the summer. A small but well-kept museum preserves the most important finds of the area.

💦 The Κamares (=Arches) of Kavala

✨The Old Aqueduct, known to the inhabitants of Kavala as "Kamares", is a well-preserved aqueduct and its most recognizable monument. Until 1911, it was still used to supply drinking water to Kavala coming from the mountainous area of Old Kavala.
✨ The aqueduct was built in the early 16th century, during the time of Suleiman the Magnificent (1494-1566) on pre-existing remnants of an old Roman aqueduct. The construction of the project lasted about 10 years & it was made of granite & bricks with a length of 270 m. & a height of 25 m. with 60 arches.
✨The water started from the spring, which is known as "The Mother of Water" which is located at an altitude of 400 m., followed a route of 6.5 km, passed through the area Su-Yol (= the road of water) & ended on the fortified peninsula of Kastro. With this important project Kavala developed in population & prospered and became a big city.
