Our trek out to California wasn’t just to start our van life journey. It was to celebrate love and see our friends get married 💒🚐

We’ve officially been on the road for about a week now! 🚐

It has NOT been easy, so let’s talk about it.

Right before leaving, we found out one of our brakes was completely destroyed, which led to us replacing all the brakes and rotors.

Due to some personal circumstances, we also had to leave a few days later than originally planned. Not ideal, especially with a schedule to keep.

About three days into our trip, a bunch of warning lights appeared on the dash. Of course, it was a Saturday night in a small town, and most repair shops were closed on Sunday. What was supposed to be a quick stop turned into an unexpected two-night stay.

We eventually got the part replaced by a third-party shop, but the warning lights stayed on. After weighing our options, we made the decision to continue closer to our destination and try again.

The part was finally fixed properly, but another issue was discovered in the process, delaying us yet again.

On top of all that, we’ve been dealing with a heatwave. With two cats on board, keeping the van cool is nonnegotiable, so we’ve had to pay for campsites with electrical hookups to run our AC.

Written out, it might not sound like much, but when your vehicle is also your home, navigating repairs, unexpected expenses, and delays becomes a whole different challenge.

We’ve hit A LOT of speed bumps since buying this van, and I’m sure there will be plenty more. But despite everything, I wouldn’t change a damn thing.

Between all the chaos, we’ve still managed to experience some pretty incredible moments.

These are a few of the beautiful ones I’ve caught on my phone along the way. 📸

Here’s to hoping week two is a little less eventful. 🤞

Turns out buying the van was the easy part 🚐

Shortly after we got back from Japan, we drove four hours to pick up what was about to become our home. 🚐

At first, it was small upgrades here and there—figuring out what worked, getting the cats acclimated, and learning the van while also working full time and packing up our life in Baltimore.

Then July came and we started tackling the bigger projects. Our first major upgrade was installing a new roof fan, which somehow turned into a month-long chain of projects 😅 And once we finally left Baltimore, the projects definitely didn’t stop.

We’re learning as we go, fixing things along the way, and slowly turning this van into a home for the two of us + three cats.

There’s been a lot of trial and error already, and we’re only getting started.

This is our journey. 🚐🐈🐈🐈
