‘Beyond Theory: Imagining Infrastructure’ in retrospect

The second edition of MAP’s annual conference was a gathering of artists, art workers, collectives, art institutions, and representatives from grant-making bodies. They engaged in conversations, sharing learnings and doubts about how they work with and reimagine infrastructure in the region.

These conversations revealed moments of success, but also of breakdown, calling for systems to be re-evaluated and fixed. The panels touched upon various concerns, including the inception of arts infrastructure in the region, material and immaterial shifts discernible in artistic practice, instances leading to innovation and more enduring models, changing curatorial and discursive frameworks, and more.

All of which was punctuated by a performance of “I Promise the Bearer” delivered by @anujaghosalkar

Beyond Theory was programmed in conjunction with our permanent exhibition, VISIBLE/INVISIBLE: Representation of Women in Art through the MAP Collection. Drawing from various thematic threads of the collection, the exhibition highlights questions and frameworks to broaden the arguments within feminist discourse.

The White Money Website is online!

After more than a year we present interviews, performances, talks, resources on the new website, that serves as documentation of the White Money project as well as an articulation of complications around arts funding from the Global North to the Global South.

www.white-money.org

Aderemi Adegbite invented and inaugurated the first Nigerian Cultural Institute of Yoruba Culture in Germany. Anuja Ghosalkar performed the complicated ethics and harsh economies of working as an artist in India. Rehema Chachage shredded a heap of rejected funding applications and manually transforms them into something new. Abhishek Thapar took the audience on an intimate and speculative journey through their bank accounts, minds and hearts. Azade Shahmiri’s lecture performance showed representations of the West in Iranian plays and posed questions of the past to the present. Nora Amin shed light on the history of so called 'belly dance' and wrestled the dance from the exoticised and voyeuristic gaze.

NEW WORKSHOP ALERT

what does money mean to You, an art-practitioner? in today’s reality can art exist in counter-capitalist imaginations?
outside the governed models, what are the material realities that inform our ArtMaking?

as artists and makers functioning within the ecosystem of artfunding, grappling with the everyday realities of capital and caste based infrastructures, how do we navigate checkered conversations around money and our own perceptions of it? what are those thoughts, aspirations, trepidations, around modes and methods of generating income?
how do we thereafter deduce more intuitive ways to value (our own?) creative endeavours, outside the binary systems of evaluation?

PROMISING THE BEARER is a 2-day workshop that will navigate the checkered realities of art and artmaking, as we examine the inherent relationship it shares with money. distributed over 5-6 hours between Saturday and Sunday (July 2 and 3), we will Collectively dive deep into the perceptions that drive us to value our own/another’s work, and envision projections of our professional futures. in the process, we will
Imagine And Create Fictional Currency, As A Modicum Of Reflection On Equitable Interactions.

*do note, that the workshop is not designed to plan “better” finances or make suggestions for profitmaking, but rather is an attempt to examine the complex, murky relationships we have with money as a mode of transaction. Especially as independent, creative individuals, who function outside the normative systems of distribution, how money inform our everyday choices of art-making?

Individually and Together, we might perhaps enquire into ways to Subvert the Power Relations that money, funding sources and these market forces inherently bring. Conversely, how do we respond if we ourselves Occupy positions that determine the value for/of someone’s work?

and eventually, What Is The Promise Of The Bearer? the one who holds the Currency for Exchange? what Values does that Bearer ascribe with respect to its Circulation, Use and Forecast?

TIFA WORKING STUDIOS
Pune, Maharashtra - 2015:

Founded by Trishla Talera and Roshan Talera, the TIFA residency started in 2015 in a defunct 1940s Art Deco hotel in Pune. The architecture of the space, in many ways, informed the residency. It offers 12 interconnected flexible studios designed for interactions and making. It also houses a maker’s space, co-working lab, a library, a project space and a cafe. “The TIFA residency was initiated to support multi-disciplinary practices of young creatives through local engagement and global exchange. It facilitates experimentation, collaboration, research, making and presentation through critical discussion and gamification,” shares Trishla. “The programme brings together the academia and industry of the city to fuel innovative practices.“

•@anujaghosalkar on conventional theatre norms, the performing body, violence and gender in performing arts•

F Se Feminism (translates as F stands for Feminism) focuses on understanding why claiming spaces is important to Feminism. Anuja does that through her art, where the public (the stage) and the private (her own body) worlds collide.
