last park city @sundanceorg film festival was filled with an incredible amount of joy and inspiration mixed with the privilege of cognitive dissonance in celebrating cinema amidst the cruelty and violence in our current everyday world. ultimately, the week in utah energized me to keep telling stories that deserve to be told with the people who feel the same.

i had the immense honor of speaking with icons @cheryldunye @1nadinesmith @iamalexanderking moderated by the incredible @sharsaysso on a panel with @glaad and @impactloungeofficial about responsible storytelling. lately i’ve found myself feeling discouraged by what “success” looks like in this industry and what people are willing to leave behind or exploit to get there, but i left the event feeling confident, grateful, and ready to “create the rooms you want to be in,” as cheryl put so beautifully. thank you to my collaborator @nataliejasmineharris for connecting me to the lovely glaad team @julian.walker @theslaygawd @dashawnusher @shikoeverafter_ and for everyone who came to join the conversation 💞

on that note, i hosted alongside @smingsauce a delightful gathering of women and nonbinary filmmakers of color. the turnout and conversations genuinely gave me so much fuel to keep going and build these crucial (and honestly, super fun) spaces. endless gratitude to @jenny8lee for lending us the space and my dear friends who donated cash for food & drinks. looking forward to continuing this in nyc and at other festivals 🥂

finally, running into friends old and new (not all pictured here but all captured in my heart!) was such a treat, and it was extra special to be able to support and celebrate some friends’ latest projects. endlessly inspired by the films i got to see. the first pic features friends with whom i’ve gotten to experience my first 3 times at sundance and i couldn’t have asked for a better crew to debrief each day over frozen pizzas with.

okay essay over! tldr i love making and watching movies with good people and im so thankful for all of your support! congrats and thank you to the sundance team including volunteers!!!

This time, last year I got to attend a workshop through the Building Bridges Fellowship hosted by @islamicscholarshipfund @sundanceorg & @dorisdukefdn. Hands down, it was one of the most transformative experiences of my life. And, our fellow cohort members are truly now GEMS of my life. I can’t thank this trip, the Shangri La Museum, and the beautiful land of Hawaii enough for giving me the spiritual, creative, and energetic reset I so, so needed. Looking back a year later, I know that trip was the start of pulling me out of a big creative slump I was in. Forever grateful for the work of @aizzahfatima and @imanzawahry who herd our ISF flock - they deserve all the flowers in the world for what they do to support Muslim filmmakers -- go check out @islamicscholarshipfund 's work 😘 and so much love to @zeybarahman @alesia_weston (and other other lovely people at the foundation and on the ground at the museum) and @emmahopewarner & our Hajnal Apa who made this all possible! 🧿
