When I saw that @carla_barla_garla was releasing a new essay cookbook, ‘Food is a Feeling’ ; that encompassed her grief and loss of her 24 year marriage I knew that I wanted to support her. I remember watching her journey on Instagram; feeling her honest and rawness refreshing as she was navigating her way through loss, release, and change. I found that it took me down memory lane….
When I noticed that Carla was heading to Seattle for a book signing tour, I felt so compelled to be there! What a gift bringing my friend @anyafullyalive along with me, allowing for our own evening of uninterrupted conversations, the beauty of time, and a lovely meal to wrap up the evening.
Life is such a gift of unexpected turns; finding our way home to ourself . 🫶🏼

Right before we got married @anyafullyalive and I were out being ourselves and @cassidyalysephotography noticed. We did a photo session in the golden hour during my favorite time of year in the PNW. That there is our latest addition to the family, Anyas 1990 Jeep Wagoneer (I call her Karma).

Sometimes the session finds me before I even know their names. 🤎

I was driving from Bremerton out to Point No Point for a maternity session when I spotted these two cruising ahead of me in the raddest vintage Jeep Wagoneer.

The light was hitting that old Jeep just right, they looked effortlessly cool, and my creative brain immediately went, I NEED TO PHOTOGRAPH THEM.

So naturally… I begged. 😂 and yay, they agreed! It also just so happened they were getting MARRIED at the end of the week 🥹

I just knew I needed to capture their love exactly like I saw it in that moment… the windows down, vintage Jeep, beautiful light, a little nostalgic, a little wild, and completely them.

And thankfully, they trusted my crazy creative vision.

Sessions like this are exactly why I love what I do. Sometimes inspiration isn’t planned or Pinterest-boarded. Sometimes it literally drives right past you. ✨

The heat and the landscape rule Oaxacas untamed southern coast. Puerto Escondido lulls you with its sauna-like heat and immaculate ocean views. The jagged mountain ridges reach the ocean in rocky outcrops that create a town with several deep sand beaches of all variety. Carizolillos steps lead you to a swelling pool of turquoise water where whole families wade and picnic, the havens of Angelito and Manzanillo rest alee and fill with fishing boats, their gentle sloping beaches become night clubs after sunset. Less than 30 minutes away Zicatela and Punta bookend the “Mexican Pipeline” a rapidly breaking shallow meat grinder of a beach that remain a riddle to many surfers. Its broad face bakes in the direct sun. Just behind it surf bums cruise the hard pan streets full of restaurants and clothing stores. Mexican food is just one option here, almost everything is a fusion, Japanese and Korean food can be found among hamburgers, pizza and pastas that are all done well. Hearty meals are harder to find until late at light and ceviche and tlayudas (huge tortillas smothered in beans and custom toppings folded in two over fire heated comal) are common fare. Pitchers of limonada -blended from the fragrant fresh lime trees — glasses are rimmed with salt to help you rehydrate since merely stepping outside makes you sweat.
I bought surf lessons in Carizalillo -easy breezy, and Punta Zicatela —fast and furious, and got up in both places. There are sea turtles everywhere, grazing in the clear, warm water that let you know you can surf if you just look up, let go, and relax.

The non-plan continues. The further the better the higher the mountain the loftier reward. Brave, swift Busses and mototaxis carried us here, pumping Cumbia and Mexican regional music from custom USB drives, impromptu DJs that blew my mind. @casachuparrosas confirmed for us that all things you can imagine possible and every door to pass through is just another portal. We are eating our way through the state of Oaxaca like the butterflies of Sierra Del Sur. Tlayudas, flowers, pasta (!), chorizo, peanuts, chicatanas (ants), chapulines (crickets), mole negro, the mole is savory but everything flavor is bright -spiked with locally grown produce and fruits. While hot, the Oaxaca valley is blessed with rainfall from the surrounding walls of mountains, producing watermelons twice as big and three times as sweet, sweet pineapple, flowery papaya, and hundreds of varieties of tomatoes, each with their own distinct texture and flavor from the blueberry sized but savory “negro Azteca”, to the punchy green “jitomate riñon”. Everything here is different, distinct, rough and un-smoothed by corporate controls, or American efficiencies. The pace here moves like the seasons -without hurry, because there is plenty.
